Front 6x9 Speakers

The dash speakers are simple to get to. Unsnap the A-Pillars, remove a few bolts (I believe one for the speaker covers, two for the speakers) and you're done. I'd leave these OUT (do not replace them). Your new speakers will more than compensate for them, and if you leave them in the high range sounds may clash due to the different speaker materials (it will also be overly bright)...

Take care,

Got the fronts in last night... was pretty simple... just needed a clarification on this (I ended up getting the 3-way Kappas instead of the 2-ways)... When you say leave them out, do you mean just not to replace them? Or do you mean to actually disconnect them? My installer buddy suggested to disconnect them, but I wanted to get your input...

Disconnect and remove them. They're going to be WAAAAAAAY harsh, especially with 3-ways up front, and if you disconnect them you may as well save some weight while you're at it (get em outta there) :-P

Got the rears done in about three hours... my less than creative approach to the different spaced holes? Zip ties :) Seems fairly secure, and it was easy... so there :)

Now, do I just have huge hands or something? I can't reach in far enough to remove the front "tweeters" on the dash... I can barely reach the harness but can't unclip it because it's surrounded by some adhesive felt or somthing :o

Yeah, the adhesive stuff can just be pulled back or ripped. It's not too bad if you can get the reach.

hmmm i ran thru Best Buy this morning to check out some speakers.

They showed me some Alpines which are pretty nice. But since I have to wait to get my aftermarket unit installed, how much sound difference would I get if I install the speakers (F&R) with the stock deak?

Should I just wait to install it at the same time with the aftermarket deck? Ima get a dual din aftermarket deck with navi and al lthat later on this year.

They will make an improvement straight off the factory deck, but you will realize more gains when you replace the headunit as well. Not sure which Alpines you were looking at... Both the Type S and Type R series are nice, but if you plan to amp in the future go Type R, if not, Type S.

Do you plan to do your own install? I ask simply because I'd advise that you question yourself a couple times if you have even considered having Best Buy touch your trim or paneling!

Oooh i see. Thanks for the advice. Best Buy doing my install? Nah no way. I have a friend who would be giving me his discount on car audio parts so thats why i was even there.

I'll do the install myself if not I'm going to be having a friend who has been doing audio installs for years as a side job.

Another question, the guy at Best Buy told me that the Front Speakers are 6x5. I couldve swore I read that the fronts are 6x9's as well? Am I mistaken or the best buy guy just tryna make up bs to sell?

And THAT's why you don't have Best Buy touch your stuff (no such thing as a "6x5" speaker, in our cars or any other);-)

Oooh wait a minute there. If he said "6.5 inch" speaker he may have been correct.

What year / model Solara do you have (this thread was for a Gen 2 Coupe, so I was just assuming you had the same)?

Yes I have a 2004 Coupe. I'm sorta confused about what size speaker they have upfront. Ooops yes he did say 6.5" (my fault for mistyping).

Hmmm... interesting! If you find that they are not completely secure with the ties... you might try industrial strength double-sided foam-type adhesive tape. (3M) Worked great on mine so far... (I think it helps to "dampen" the mount well too. )

Yeah, if you have an '04 Coupe they are 6x9s up front and in the rear. If you have the JBL system you have the dash speakers as well.

Hmm ok then I guess my best bet is to buy 4 6x9 speakers, amp, and sub after I get my aftermarket deck?

What if I get a 4-way channel amp with the 4 6x9's for the time being to upgrade my stock sound. Then later add a sub and an aftermarket deck? Does that sound like a good strategy?

Personally, having TRIED using a "line-level" converter off the stock JBL head unit to an amp... I was COMPLETELY dissatisfied with that arrangement, and continued with a H/U after a DAY of dialing the converter in. I found that the sound off the JBL H/U with new speakers was BETTER than the sound off the JBL H/U WITH a converter and amp.

If you want clean sound quality, the stock H/U might not be "GREAT", but it may be BETTER than converting back to RCA (line-level) and trying to drive a separate amp that way...

Just my thoughts... (I think others have had a similar experience?)
