Upgrading Headunit

Postby NightRider » Wed Oct 17, 2007 12:58 am

I just ordered a new alpine head unit the other day and it should be arriving next week. Anyways I have a couple of questions re: my situation. I already tried searching for my answers but no luck.

Where would be a good place to drill in through the firewall for my amp for my 4-gauge wiring to power my subs.

And second, I know my car has the JBL system in it and it has the amp to power them. I know it's probably pretty simple to bypass. Like what I did before in the same situation is that I spliced all the wires directly connecting it to the aftermarket headunit so all speakers can be amplified by the deck itself and completely cut-off the JBL amp.

Or do I have to run separate speaker wire from each speaker? Which I hope I don't have to right?

Any input/answers is greatly appreciated!

Night, you should be able to use one of the existing holes in your firewall now just use one of those unless you really really wanna drill a hole that bad lol good luck bro, I was too scared to drill so I just found a existing hole on the passen. side :D

It really depends on your taste. From what I have read, the amp actually controls the sound logic in our cars, but I could be wrong.

If you want the absolute best setup, run new wires to each speaker. But that would be overkill to me. I just prefer loud clear sound. I am no competition junkie or anything.

Are you an audiophile? or just prefer a better headunit and some bass?

If you are not going to be running a new amp for your door speakers, use the existing amp. Metra makes a harness with RCAs so you can plug it right into your deck without needing to do a lot of splicing.

l know in my jbl system 1.5 that with my alpine h/u it does amplify the system... thinkin back to when i installed it this summer i def just used the exsisting wiring and spliced it. sounds great. i suggest tryin it first, im pretty sure that if you do it right it will be amplified with the h/u and not just the JBL stock unit

^^^ I'd do SOME kind of replacement speakers... (the stock one's really are... well... LAME!)

...the AMPS are OPTIONAL... you can just go off the H/U, as well.

note: old skool amps... but they work.

Image

^^^ Take the lead ends that I am NOT holding (RED, WHITE, BLACK, and YELLOW... that run out to the speakers...) and tap them from the H/U. (the stock JBL amp can be left alone...)

The PINK, GREEN, PURPLE and BLUE one's... would go to your head unit... for example... (seen in the background.)

...in my case, those are coming from my amps in the back.

Image

^^^ Here's where you TAP through the firewall. There is ALREADY a large RUBBER BOOT that has a NIPPLE that you can "snip" and run your 4GA (or whatever) through. Try using "soapy water" or "armorall" (I don't like armorall) to "lube" the power lead so it "slides thru" the boot.

It will appear "readily" with the other large harness from up under the dash.

Good luck.
