IMO - it'd be better to find a decent amp on craigslist or forums that's been depriciated already and a fine sub as well. you can probably find one that are top notch at a fraction ov the cost. Don't rush into the best buy/circuit city lighting techniques to buy ur first system. (don't get me wrong- those are fine places ) If you're like many ov us here- you'd eventually want to get something BIGGER.- and once a system is out of the store and cannot be returned or exchanged ur lookin' to loose about 35-40% of what you paid for. real talk. So consider your options- we all want the best for our babies- but we all want to be sensible as well.

Do you have an aftermarket head unit yet? If not, get that first. I learned the hard way.

Are you looking for bass? Or clarity? Eclipse are all about clarity. For the same price you can get a single sub or dual kicker subs that hits harder if your into hardcore bass.

I think its a very subjective thing to ask in a forum.

There are just SOOOO man y ways to go with audio - and none are better than the others in ALL applications - regardless what anyone tells you.

Things to consider BEFORE you start shopping:

- What style of music do you listen to in the car?
- Are you trying to impress people with how loud your bass can thump or do you want a full, quality sound?
- Do you care if you hear any mid-range (or is your ear trained enough to even hear it?)
- If you're sitting in the garage with the engine off and the stereo on, can you dial in a decent sound balance/quality off your OEM HU?
- What's your budget? Can you wait or in a hurry to just get SOMETHING?

Sound gear means very different things to most people. To some, it's all about head-rattling and they couldn't give a crap about overall range or full-spectrum quality. They just want to rattle the sh!t outta their car and vibrate the mirrors on the cars next to them.

It cracks me up how they test your system at the car shows - measuring db ratings across a sub-spectrum instead of checking for a quality sound installation.

If you listen to MUSIC much (not just rap/hip hop) then you might care about the rest of the speakers more as well. But since you're posting about subs/enclosures - that leads me to think that you're just into the "thump" for now.

You can still upgrade your OEM system by replacing amps/speakers and get a better, fuller sound without sacrificing the HU functions and controls on the steering wheel - and not spend too much $$ either.

But like what .onetohate said - maybe getting a used system to start out with might be the way to go until you're satisfied with the results you're looking for. ;)

Hit the nail on the head... with the brands too... first is Alpine(premium sound ) and next is pioneer premier. I've also been a big fan of the Alpine Type X Sub, and they're amps are superior quality. Embarrased to say, i recently had my amp running my subs die on me (not alpine) and i didnt want to buy a new one because i'm currently saving for a house... I had a 200W Alpine running the door speakers because my CD Player does not have a built in amp... well needless to say, i wanted bass so i rigged everything at 4Ohm load to the one 200W Alpine amp (2 tweeters, the 2 6.5's, and 2 6x9', AND 2 12" Audiobahn subs) and it drives everything quite impressively.... you can still here me a block away. I can obviously tell a little difference in the sound quality but i was DAMN impressed... moral of the story... go with alpine, you wont be dissappointed and it'll last you longer than your car

If you're not going to do anything other than adding the sub with amp, then that pioneer sub and alpine amp is more than enough to supplement your current system.
BUT later on down the line, if you find that little extra kick from your bass package to be insufficient... you're gonna have to spend extra cash upgrading the amp and subs.
So to answer your question, I think its gonna make your stock audio system sound better.

If you want to keep your oem head unit you could always get a sound processor.

Rockford has a model

Image

3SIXTY.1
Interactive Signal Processor & OEM Interface (Patent Pending)
The 3Sixty.1 is the most advanced OEM integration processor on the market. It’s advanced artificial intelligence allows the use of aftermarket car audio equipment to be utilized with virtually any OEM source unit. In addition, it’s equalization process overcomes and corrects for any OEM equalization inadequacies. It’s auxiliary input enables you to add an iPod or other external audio devices.

15 wide Q filters (user adjustable)

6-channel high-level input

6-channel RCA level inputs (FR/FL/RR/RL/Center/Sub)

153 bands of equalization for OEM Integration

Auto equalization with auto sum capability

Auxiliary RCA inputs

Digital Signal Processor with OEM integration capabilities (patent pending)

Remote programmable master volume/aux volume control

Wireless Bluetooth®

OEM audio systems contain vehicle and speaker specific equalization. These equalization settings are not compatible with aftermarket equipment and will yield a less than desirable sound.

The 3Sixty utilizes powerful DSP processing to remove or "normalize" the factory OEM settings. This Auto Normalization process occurs automatically as part of the OEM set-up wizard. The net result is a flat frequency response with the dynamic range of even the finest aftermarket source units.

Additionally, 3Sixty allows installer access to all of the DSP audio functions(crossover, equalizer, level adjustments and time delay) via the PDA Bluetooth interface. This allows for an unparalleled level of sound adjustments to customize your aftermarket system to your audio tastes.

Process of OEM signal being fed into a 3Sixty
Connect OEM front, rear and subwoofer speaker leads into 3Sixty inputs.
Fine tune system by adjusting time alignment, x-over and output level controls.
Connect any auxiliary source (MP3, DVD, iPod®, Satellite Radio) to AUX inputs of 3Sixty.
2-Channel w/ OEM Speakers

Multi-Channel w/ Aftermarket Speakers
