Mounting Amp

Mounting Amp

Postby NightRider » Wed Nov 07, 2007 12:07 pm

As the thread states, I installed my subs and my amp the other day and I come to find that the rear seats are made of this thin metal type of skeleton. My previous cars they had particle board and it was easy to drill into them. I know I could probably do the same but what did you other people do as far as mounting your amp to your back seat on the passenger side any suggestions ideas?

I drilled into mine and then add some track bar from flooring material to have the amp separated form the seat to allow air flow . then just screwed it in

I'm quite fond of the way I did mine:

Basically, mdf board cut to shape, and wrapped in carpeting...

I agree with Cklinh, the best method is to fabricate an amp rack. I did mine a bit of the opposite and made a backing platform to fully conceal wiring in the trunk side. Otherwise, just drill into the back of your seat as you would normally do. A good drill bit will cut through like butter.

I used to have the amp installed upside down on the top part of the trunk
This will not display your amp, but you can have Maximum space for your trunk.
I drilled a hole to the sheet metal and just screwed it in.
(just be careful with what you have on the other side.)

or... you can go all custom...
even though, it will kill your trunk space, look nicer ^^

^^^ I "inherited" James' amp board... and it is working quite nicely. Stealthy, functional, and easily accessed. Works for me.

If you have the patience and a bit of know how it's not all that hard to do, just a bit time consuming. I built the one I used / Crisp is using, and I believe Cklinh built his own as well.

All you really need is a 1/2" MDF board to mount the amp(s) on, and a 1/4" MDF board if you want to build a backing plank to make it completely stealth. Home Depot or the like would take care of that... Then you can get some carpeting that matches your trunk from any Myer-Emco, Tweeter, or whatever other local A/V dedicated shops you have around. Take measurements before you cut, and cut it a bit oversized the first few rounds so you can fit it and re-trim if necessary (once you cut it too small it's too late).

If you don't have the time / patience, any local installer I'm sure would build something for you... (I'd go to a stand alone audio shop, not Best Buy, Circuit City or the like). I haven't had anything built / installed by anyone else for quite a long time, but I can't imagine it would run more than a couple hundred $ depending on what you have done.

Another option is to cut the wood yourself so that it fits as you like and have it carpeted by an audio shop, as the carpeting is the biggest pain in the ass of it all (although still not too bad with some patience). This would probably save you a good deal of $.
