what is each speakers wattage?

Matt, yes, the amp has certain pre-set cross-over points.

While this shouldn't matter for the mids/highs, I always advise just taking the dash speakers out and leaving them out, but that's a preference thing...

When you put in new speakers they have their own high-range, so if you add additional high range (especially speakers built using different material) it usually clashes and doesn't sound right.

But you are correct to state that you can not just replace the dash speakers with tweets.

Found the answer for you (assuming you have the 7 speaker JBL system):

Dashboard Squawker is 1.7 ohms, 15 watts
Front Door (6x9") is 4 ohms, 20 watts
Rear speaker is 2.4 ohms 20 watts
Bass speaker 1.2 ohms 80 watts

The 6 speaker system speakers are all rated 17.5 watts, fronts are 4 ohms, rear are 6 ohms and there's no thumper.

Another interesting thing, there's a circuit in the amp for convertibles that knows whether the top is open or closed and 'changes' the equalization automatically to suit the condition.

Later today I'll attach a scan from the factory manual to an e-mail for you. I couldn't get a cut/paste to work on the forum.

Cheers

Very good find Gadget. That's odd that the rears would be 6Ohms, very interesting.

Those must be RMS numbers. 17.5W RMS roughly equates to 55-60W MAX, so that'd make sense. I'd assume that the dash speakers receive the same power whether convertible or coupe.

So yeah, I'd say the stockers are probably rated to handle 20-30W RMS each.

As stated before, go for a good quality speaker that's rated to handle between 40-75W RMS and you'll be fine. Don't under-do it in case you decide to upgrade in the future, and don't over-do it with components or overly high end coaxials to run straight off the headunit.

I think there were some speakers mentioned on this thread earlier on that would be great additions.

Yup, front and rears should be powered the same. Dash speakers are less.

You should have a PM with a link to the data you're looking for (and a bit more, sorry for all the convertible stuff).

As posted above info for the 6 speaker system is:
All speakers rated 17.5 watts, fronts (dash and doors) are 4 ohms, rear are 6 ohms and there's no thumper.

No no... I'm sorry, I misunderstood... I was saying fronts and rears in your car should be receiving approx the same power as EACH OTHER... sorry about that... Check out what Gadget sent ya, it's pretty tight.
