I was playing some basketball today and a guy told me he would sell me a 18" sub and two amps for $500-$700. Should I buy? Oh yea, the equipment has never been used.

what 18" is it? shocker, audiobahn...?
To properly run an 18" you probably need around 10-15cuft of space, which is probably the entire trunk along with the tire well.
Such large subs usually need a sufficient amount of power to run them too...at least 2,000watts
Of course this all depending on what sub you run.

But overall, i wouldn't do it. Get yourself a decent pair of 12's or 10's and about 500 watts and you'll be happy.

18" subs are BOOMY and DISTORTED at best....

Once upon a time... (back nearly 2 decades ago...) I had an RX-7 Turbo with a 6.5 cubic ft. "WEDGE" enclosure housing a single ROCKFORD FOSGATE 18" at a downward facing angle right between the front seats... drove it with a KAC1021... I could play a low "C" from "Also Spracht Zaruthstra" sp? --> Space Oddyssey 2000 soundtrack and make every car in an intersection vibrate so hard people used to start looking around trying to locate the 747 that was about to land on their roof... TOTAL gonad tuck into your nether regions from THAT sucker....

...but I digress.... the overall SOUND QUALITY and CLARITY SUCKED! You just can't DAMP the X-MASS from THAT LARGE A CONE. (plus, the enclosure you need to TUNE is SO FRICKIN' HUGE!!! Mine was down around 30hz... VERY LOW... even for a sub...)

IMHO...

then why buy such hard hitting subls, you'll be paying fines for noise pollution/amplication. and ear surgery too.

But for those who love,

a properly set up 12 or 10 or pair of either can provide PLENTY of low end fill and "hit"... anything more than that, and you are creating MUD, not MUSIC. (IMHO)

Quality and CLARITY over QUANTITY anyday of the week...

Heck, for THAT matter, a very nice system can be achieved with a couple well dialed 8's!

Don't forget, the "smaller" subs will ALWAYS have better control than the MONGO subs....

IMHO i think one 12 inch will have quality and thump. I'm running just one JL 12 inch W6v2 and it hit clean. It was loud enough for me and i didn't have to sacrifice a lot of space with only sub. The box really matters too. I had a completely sealed box and it hit no where as hard as when i got an enclosure box with a side vent.

This is a box that looks similar to the one that i have.
