they mentioned that the rubber or foam under the leather would be all dried up and can be re-used. they said doing a good job would cost like 200-300$ so they said, its not worth the trouble, just paint it.

Sounds about right. It's an easy job for me but that's because my backround is different than most upholstery people.

Yeah clean hands are important. My work and school get my hands dirty and even after washing them I end up with a little dirt on the wheel, I clean it every couple weeks.
Trust me, I'm a technician.

I just got an IDEA! I saw a really nice TAN steering wheel
cover at Wal-Mart on my lunch break today that cost only 5 bucks
or so. It was vinyl, but well made and looked like leather with
nice stitching and made to fit over the steering wheel without
any roping. I couldn't think of a reason to buy it today, but now
I think I'll go back and get it tomorrow to use as
a temporary cover for my steering wheel when I take it in for
service, because those grease monkey mechanics always have
dirty hands. I'll see if I can find a boot for the shifter also because
somebody got some grease on my shift handle once. jimmm

jimmm,

If you want a boot for your shift knob, pm me and I'll put something together for you.

I assume you want something to cover the shift knob?
