quick question about used parts

quick question about used parts

Postby yaddadaimsayin » Wed Jan 07, 2009 7:02 pm

What is your take on buying used parts? such as used springs or a used intake? What is the life expectancy on TRD springs or an Injen CAI? I want to get both but I can only afford one of them new right now so what would be the better choice to go with for used? Thanks for the help

I would think the intakes would last a couple years, the spirngs a little longer before they start wearing out. And a short ram intake according to other threads would be better for a bigger carbecause they create more torque rather than horsepower.

I wouldn't worry on buying a used intake but I would put a mileage limit on buying used springs because they tend to wear out their stiffness after a certain amount of mileage.

^agreed!

Buying a sri used depends on the brand. The injen doesn't have any chips or moving parts so it shouldn't perform any different than a new one. Springs are prone to degredation/constant stress over time so the fewer miles the better.

Springs depending on how old/how many miles... but mainly, the issue here would be the struts IMO. I got mine used and they're pretty shot right now. Plus my friggin' ride is squeaking like a buckboard! Wish I had the $$ to get some COs!

CAI has no moving parts - it's basically just a big tube with a filter on the end, so that shouldn't be an issue.

*Edit - I meant to say SRI (like Injen) since there is no off the shelf CAI for the Gen 2. Which further makes your poll make no sense.

All the parts I've put on my car are used and I haven't had a problem yet.

But I agree with PXL, the Gen 2 (even the 1 and 1.5 for that matter) have no specific CAI, so your poll is moot. You can buy an SRI and fabricate your own cold air extension, though.

Watch the springs miles, but like everyone has already said, an intake is just a tube with a MAF opening and a filter on the end. Everything that can mess up on an intake, such as clogged vacuum nipples, can be cleaned out easily. My friend at one point, put an intake from his older Chevy truck with 160k+ miles on it, onto his brand new Chevy truck and still saw the same extra power output that his old truck had when he put it on there. Might not be a bad idea to replace the filter, but if its a reusable, its usually not needed.
