Stock Resonator or Aftermarket?

Stock Resonator or Aftermarket?

What is the difference between our stock Toyota resonators than aftermarket ones such as Magnaflow?

I wasn't aware that Magnaflow made a resonator... is it a different dia than OEM? Higher flow?

I know some people have taken theirs out altogether and just ran straight from the Cat to the Muffler. JP tells me there is no performance gains but only a sound change... but I may not have heard him correctly either. (hey - it happens!) ;)

main difference is air flow.
aftermarket will have better flow and hypothetically will gain HP. however, just by replacing resonator, probably the performance gain will be pretty much nothing... it will get loud
I have Vibrant's resonator, and it worked out pretty good (it is on a little more pricey side though).

if you do upgrade exhaust, do it from all the way from intake, header, y-pipe (for v6), and resonator to the muffler.
since you are on v6, i think you will get more performance gain than the one i have i4.

good luck.

Yeah, Magnaflow & some other company's make hi flow resonators in different size diameters & lengths. I had the stock resonator taken off of Jes's lara two weeks ago & had the muffler shop weld on a straight pipe to the muffler. Piping is now 2.50in from the cat back. Without the stock resonator it sounded a little raspy at higher RPM's. I'm going to have the resonator put back on but I thought I'd might as well upgrade if its worth it. I still have the stock one but I'm thinking to upgrade to another one due to the different diameter of the pipe.

Since Jeff is working on that header/y-pipe for us, I have 2.50in piping from the cat to the muffler. The muffler is a magnaflow w/TRD tip. It sounded more refined with the stock resonator than without. As for flow, the resonator is just packed with fibers & perforated to cancel different exhaust frequencies. What makes the aftermarket hi flow compared to the stock one?

Thx man 8)

Daymn Fine Lookin' Tip!

Resonators (OE) versus Universal Round Mufflers (Resonators)

The OE resonator is designed to take out a specific period of high frequency noise. It is also used to increase general tuning volume on the system. Toyota uses a standard 10:1 ratio on displacement to tuning volume. (3.3L V-6 has a total 33L of tuning volume in the exhaust)

If the muffler is in a tight place, some of that tuning volume is compensated by the resonator.

In the case of universal mufflers, you want to use a muffler about the same size and shape as the OE. If the rear muffler is a little too loud, then replace your resonator with a little larger body diameter and a little longer.

One other item to keep in mind is the pipe diameter inside the resonator. Going larger will increase performance but reduce sound attenuation. It's always a trade, you rarely get performance and quiet.

Wzup Brian?

You would know about that exhaust tip since you originally had a bunch of them for sale. Appreciate your response man. Here is a shot of the muffler that I put on Jes's Lara. The muffler is 20 inch's long. It's smaller looking compared to the stock one.

As for the resonator, I don't mind gaining some performance & being quieter at the some time. As long as there is some rumble, great! 8) Here is video comparison of the exhaust with & without the resonator.
