Shift knob threads + Boot Question

Shift knob threads + Boot Question

Postby XEusioN » Fri Jun 15, 2007 1:33 pm

Hey guys,

I kind of ruined my gated automatic shifter assembly (the plastic trim and sliding piece inside...long story).

So before replacing it, I was looking at removing that green plastic piece, and replacing it with a leather boot. My questions are:

1. Would I be able to attach a boot to the stock auto shift knob?

2. If not, would an aftermarket knob fit the same threads as the auto shifter?

If anybody has threading specs on either one, or has tried this before...that would be much appreciated :)

Thanks!

I'm lost here...

What "green plastic piece"?

Where can you put a boot on the auto shifter on a Gen 2?

Since there is no OD button on the Gen 2, any knob should thread on fine - as long as its the right dia and thread pitch.

Alright, now I don't feel like the only one who was lost in this. My Solara's shift knob just screws right off, no rgeen things or anything. As for the knob, I wanted to change it but I don't anymore because it matches the interior really well. :)

Sorry, green plastic thing was a bad term to use. I was talking about the plastic gate with the PRND32L on it.

The part I screwed up was all the stuff underneath there, basically the plastic that covers the gaps around the shaft itself.

What I was really looking for was the thread diameter and pitch so I knew what I could replace it with :)

Oh - you must have a 4-banger then?

The V6 has a different shift pattern I believe... we have the sport shift down and to the side - so its not just a straight P-L - and our indicators are lit up on the dash with the gear number.

As far as thread pitch and dia - never measured it. I'm still stock.

fwiw, these guys seem to know what will fit. They have Solara in their selection but don't say what the threading is. Other venders are probably the same.

Yup, it's a 4 banger. We still have the indicator on the dash too :)

The basic story of why I have to replace this thing is because the red bull marketing team thought it would be trendy and cool to have skinny cans that don't stay put in your cup holders...and when you have to make an emergency stop, the can tips over in the cup holder and spills all kinds of sugary crap right into your shifter assembly.

I came out the next day and the black plastic "dust cover" that fills the gaps around the shaft was basically sugar-glued to itself. So any attempt to move the shift lever which moves that plastic piece would damage the assembly. It's pretty much mangled from trying to force the shifter into gear and I figure instead of buying a replacement from the dealer who charges crack prices for a piece of plastic, I'd just get rid of it and try to find a decent looking boot that would match the interior instead :(

Have you called pick-a-part or any wrecked car lots? I've seena few Gen2 Soalras in there before, but still no 07's. I want those dang tail lights, lol!

My personal favorite of those knobs is the Bedford Knob. THAT would give me at least 8whp.

Hahaha, that was my second choice!

If anyone find out the pitch and threads, please post! I can't find it anywhere :(

If you want to do it the right way I'm sure you could go to a leather shop and they could fit a boot for you and find a way to attach it to the trim piece. Won't be cheap but it will look hot.

RD,

Someone has already suggested checking a wrecking yard if you want to replace the original plastic panel. A yard might also yield you a shift boot you could use from another model car or pickup. Boots usually aren't attached to the shift knob but taper (like a cone) from large at the bottom to very small at the top with lacing to hold the top snug against the shift lever.

There shouldn't be any need to replace your shift knob.

Well I ended up buying a boot and going for it. The boot is from an Accord V6 6MT and cost me $21

Here's a cellphone camera pic, I'll get a better one later :)
