K&N Air Filter - will not fit??

K&N Air Filter - will not fit??

Postby Mayor » Mon Jul 24, 2006 5:48 am

Hey guys,

I purchased a K&N Air Filter for my 2004 SLE V6 Convt. The part number for this Air Filter is: #33-2219

Here is a picture too: Image

Now I admit I am no mechanic - but I have installed a K&N Air Filter in both of my Audi's and both Porsche's but I can not get this Air Filter to fit into my Solara???

The part is just WAY to wide to fit into the Air Filter housing. I have checked and re-checked the K&N site and it states I have the right part number.

Has anyone seen this and can they suggest a part number that will work for an '04 SLE V6?

Thanks.

Before I changed to an Injen intake, some of the early aftermarket filters were too tall to fit into the airbox. This is because the filter was designed for 02-03 Camry V-6 and not fitted to an 04+ Solara. The 04+ Solaras have a charcoal filter on the upper half of the air box. (Kind of a white screen if I remember correctly. ) I used a screwdriver and pryed mine out. Breaking it free of the plastic rivets that hold it in place. After the screen was gone there were no more fitup issues.

(The OE 04+ Solara filter has rounded edges and I believe the height was slightly less.)

Phreak,

Thanks for your reply. Yeah I saw that additional white filter on the top part, but my issue is not a height issue.

If you look at the picture I posted, and you look at the pink'ish area. The stock air filter can fit inside that area - which means all the area in black is what is too large (wide) to fit in my Air Filter housing.

Thanks,

I got mine since february...I don't use it anymore since I have the CP-e intake.

The appropriate K&N filter model is 33-2219
The Product number 00KN3-32219 at http://www.trdparts4u.com/
K&N Performance Air Filter (Highlander, Sienna, Solara)
Retail Price: $55.00
Online Price:$37.95

DOH !!!

I'm editing what I posted...yeah I see that you have the good model. There is a specific side...there is slot all around the filter that will fit the air box. And also there is 3 rounded corner and one more squared corner...put the squared corner at top right position....it will fit like the last piece of a puzzle

My K&N's days are numbered too. CP-e is in the garage.

I've had my K&N for about a year. But mine is not the 33-2219, it's the 33-2260.

http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=33-2260

But my Solara is an '06. K&N only list the '06 Solara for this model, and it appears to be pretty close to the size of the 33-2219. This would probably not fit your application.

As I recall, the K&N is bigger dimensionally than the stock filter. I think they use the rubber frame to form a tighter seal with the box. And because of that, the fit isn't a drop-in like the stock filter. Check that squared off corner and make sure it's positioned right.

Good luck. You'll get it.

I had no fitment issues with my K&N filter even with the white screen [acoustic dampener].

Funny you should ask. I was looking at how high the sun was when I got home tonight, because I want to finish it in daylight. I was tempted man, but I just don't think I can finish it on a weeknight.

The plan is for Saturday. It really looks pretty easy. I've done a few intakes before. I will certainly post when I've given it a few miles.

Try lifting top cover completly off the base. I found that there may not enough clearance to move top cover complety off if intake hose is connected it the cover. Its most likely that part of top cover is seating on the base and you are not able to put the filter in due to that. (Had hard time putting the filter in myself)
