Ground Effects? I don't think so...

I liked the look of the lip kit we've seen on the newest convertibles that joined the group so much that I was curious as to whether I could 'add' the ground effects to my car.

Not surprisingly, it's not available as an accessory. But the dealer did say that I could order the parts as replacement parts. So I asked for a quote for the front and rear air dam, and the two side rocker panels...and here's what I got back:

PT228-06044-FL GFX KIT, 299.00
PT228-06044-FR GFX KIT, 299.00
PT228-06044-RL GFX KIT, 312.00
PT228-06044-RR GFX KIT, 312.00
PT228-06044-SL GFX KIT, 531.00
PT228-06044-SR GFX KIT, 531.00
SHIPPING FRIEGHT APPROXIMATELY $300.00
TOTAL $2,584.00

Almost $2,600, and that's NOT painted and NOT installed. As a factory option, the ground effects cost $995.

I guess I could start a new thread complaining that replacement parts have such a huge mark-up - but we already all knew that, huh?

In '02 I had an Mazda MPV with GFX installed. Same deal, almost 3k as a dealer installed accesory but less than 1k as an added option at the time of original sale. I was glad I got it as an option and other MPVClub members wished they had too.

If a GFX is available, I'll take it with all my new cars. Most of the cars look better with even the OEM lips rather than without imho.

Figuring that out is a SG right of passage. Congratulations, now you are a man. You're not the first to have that dream dashed, you won't be the last.

Talk to them and say it's too much. Ask if you buy it piece by piece would they give you any special deals. Most likely you can get 20% off

Yeah, 20% off doesn't excite me too much.

Now if they offered it to me for 20% of the price, I'd jump on it. Seriously, for that kit I'd probably approach $1K including paying someone to do a pro paint job, and I'd install it myself. But to see much more elaborate kits like the Extreme Dimensions Evo 5, etc, for much less, I couldn't justify spending that much.

I just liked the toned down look of the stock GFX. It kinda gives it that 'lowered' look, too.

ground effect kits are expensive to begin with.
The solara kits were like 2300 when they first came out, and then 1800 later when we all learnt of molly designs. The last molly gb was for 1200 (i believe). Not until molly sold their kits when they were going away from this biz did a lot of folks here jump on this bandwagon!

Just watch your junk yards folks, you may find pieces...but in the end..maybe someday all you may need is one or two pieces. GL

We need to find a glass man to copy those little buggers. Seems like there's really not much to the kit. Get a donor for the molds and you'll be making a profit day two.

I totally agree. There are probably enough people on this board alone to justify making these pieces, and its not that complicated of a kit.

yah, I had a customer that wanted to add the factory 17's on a Matrix, and from the manufacturer it's $650 for the upgrade, if the dealership added them it's about $2600 for wheels tires and install
