Brakes for Gen2

Brakes for Gen2

OK, who wants a research project?

<< nothing but the sound of crickets >>

I know we had the thread on Big Brake kits. This didn't help much and just confirmed that we don't have $2k for front brakes.

http://www.solaraguy.org/viewtopic.php?t=24457

For some reason, the Gen2 V6 Solara and '02-06 Camry SE vehicles are being ignored for aftermarket brakes. Rather than dropping $2K on a PAIR of front brakes, I'd like to see what it takes to retro fit another brake setup on our cars.

For example: Using Supra rotors and calipers with a custom caliper bracket. I've sent a couple emails out to Brembo and Powerslot looking for some technical advice but so far no response.

I'd be glad to have brackets made if someone is willing to take the time to develop a solution that works.

What are your thoughts on this? Anyone wanting to develop the first retrofit brake kit?

If someone in SoCal wants to leave their car at the shop for a while, I can try a few diffrent things. We do mainly Toyota's here and a few SC300/Supra 2J swaps, so I have a couple extra sets of brakes around here. I can try to see what fits or what would need to be done to make it fit.

Anyone here willing to take Danny up on his offer? (I wish I lived in SoCal)

If you could figure it out; assemble the parts together, have the bracket made and you'd have a nice kit to sell.

Are all Gen2 brakes the same? Like 4cyl/6cyl etc?

Question: When you get a/m rotors, do they have higher quality metal makeup? My pet peave w/ the stocks are that through the nice looking (stock aren't hot, but they're nice) wheels you look at thes nasty rusting rotor hubs. Would a/m stay nice?

I believe the Solara 6cyl and the Camry SE 6cyl have the same rotors. But the 4cyl SE & SLE have different rotors.

The key is to get a Gen2 V-6 or Camry SE V-6.

Having rust or not having rust does not necessarily mean its made from a higher quality metal. Its just the finish or coating that is applied that can prevent the rusting.

Hmmmm... I was wondering if the caliper mounting points were the same or not from a V6 to a 4cyl. Cuz lets say I can get something to fit a 4cyl, I'm not sure if it would work on a V6 or not. So I might have to end up trying to develope something for each trim.

Well, have we ever taken a poll to see whether there are more I4's or V6's? I have a hunch it'd be the sixers...

It'd make more sense to develop for the majority first, no? (Unless you already have an I4 ready to be the guinea pig...)

A friend of mine actually has an I4 that I'm pretty sure I could borrow. I just want to know from the start whether or not I need 2 cars or just 1 if they are the same.

I'll have someone at Toyota fax me the brake diagram for both cars and see if the part numbers match up.

Lemme know when you're ready for a V6 and I'll try to arrange to bring mine up for awhile. :)

Too bad I only have a Gen1... I'd be willing to try it if I had a Gen2, but then again, do you offer loaner cars or rent specials?

We get 30% off Enterprise, and sometimes we have loaners. But right now all my loaners are out =P
