Injen Short Ram Intake on 4 Cyl !!!

I know our solara is not a first car, and especially 4 banger like mine is not at all. But, after i saw CPE intake on Phreak's V6, I was always wanted to have that nice sound at least.. :drinking:

So... considering 2003~ Camry has the same engine as mine, and my mom's 2004 Camry has pretty much exact same set up under the hood, I gave a shot and tried the Injen SRI.

Long story short, I just finish installing SRI on my car, and had 10 minutes test ride. No CEL lights, not major problem.
It sounded awesome, very quiet under 3,300 RPM, and growl on high RPM.

only thing i notice was that it makes very high static noise kind of sound from engine bay around 2,000 to 2,500 RPM. Not very loud but noticeable when no radio is on. Does anyone have any idea??

Any ways, here are some pictures.
i don't think i would make a tutorial since the process was pretty much the same as V6.

The installation took me about an hour including replacing my mom's stock air filter with my previous K&N.
Very straight forward, and easy installation.
By the way, the part number for injen is IS2025.

Those marshmellow head filters are pretty common on some turbo setups in Japan.

yeah, i'm not sure about the mushroom like filter.. but well it works. lol

after about an hour drive to the work, here's my first impression.

first of all, it is loud. around 2,500 rpm, i start hearing a little louder than the stock air box, and little after 3,000 rpm, it start getting louder. if you reach 4,000, the tone getting lower, and very deep sound, it is really nice.

I have 4spd auto, and when i floor it, the shifting point from the first to the second became a little higher rpm, and got smoother.
the response became better, but the gas mirage went down.
usually when i cruise, it gave me a little above 32mpg, but now it is around 30mpg.

i the only thing is that when i drive on high way around 75 to 80 mph, the rpm is just below 3,000. and it gives constant growl. it's not too loud, but you can hear it's there.
but again, this is just 4 cyl auto, so it might be different from 5dpf manual.

so far, i'm very satisfied with the intake, and love it.
the static-like noise is still there around 2,500 rpm, so i will try to find out where the noise come from, and hopefully i can eliminate it.

also, FYI, i got mine off of ebay as used, but the cheapest i found for new injen is from ptuning.com, and it is 190.76 w/ free shipping.

Nice job Tact! Glad to see someone finally tested it out using the Camry intake to see if it works for the 4cyl. and it does. The green mushroom looking filter looks funny though lol~

Can you check and see if there's room behind the battery for a standard cone filter or would the pipe need to be trimmed, it looks pretty tight in that picture

Thanks :)

more i drive, more i like it.
could be that the ECU getting adjusted to the current intake, but the ride start getting a more smoother when the shift changes.
also it has less "sudden rev up" when i going up the hill.

I think it has plenty of space behind the battery, but i don't know the standard cone filter, so i cannot say..
but IS2025 is designed for camry and we have pretty much exactly the same engine room, so i don't think it will be a problem.
i'll be off town this week, but will take some picture next week and post it.

I have a few people asked me about how it is to have this intake for the 4 cyl, and here is my review for injen intake.

first of all, being honest with you, the actual difference in performance gain is minimal...
since our i4 is kind of under powered to begin with, the torque in lower rpm is very helpful which we loose by installing SRI...

but when you hit 3,000 rpm or above, you can feel the difference. it has the smoother acceleration once your car is rolling.

before, when i wanted to accelerate from dead stop, i was flooring the pedal.
now, if i do it, you feel like your car is not going no where.
instead, if you gradually put gas, and hit hard once you get to 2,500 or so, you will feel the push, and accelerate very nicely.

also once you are on highway speed, it is easy to speed up from there, since probably the rpm is around just below 3,000 or so.

IMO, SRI does not give any dramatical changes on your performance if you are looking for 0-60, but you will get great deep notes when you hit above 3,000.

I really love this mod, and no regret tho.

let me know how you think after having your intake installed.
it might be different since you have original injen filter.

do you feel a difference in terms of power between the Injen intake and the K&N filther for this car?
