sorkang has them and he's from cali, ask him if he's gotten pulled over for having more safety signals on his car.

But I'm glad you guys are looking into this because I would feel really bad if you get ticketed for something like this.

So what we have hear are the CHP version that says white would be illegal for side markers, and the DMV version that just says you can have yellow ones and doesn't say you can or cannot have white ones.

I live in Burbank, where cops tend to be strict, so I will be taking a risk with white ones, may have to with yellow.
Mike, did anyone ever buy both a white and yellow and fit the clear lense with the yello led?

Lucky for me, I don't drive that much... white for me!

PS If you're worried about the white lights... just don't signal!

Looks like I will be getting the clear/white ones. Sorkang said he has had no problems with cops.
So, Mike, I should know when the surgery will be, or if it will take place at all, on the 15th.

Amber LED Light Strips

Postby PXLpainter » Thu Feb 09, 2006 5:55 pm

FWIW - I found these flexible LED strips that have Amber LEDs inside a Clear casing - so they really only show up when ON...

Looks like you would have to drill holes in the mirror for power. So these just stick on, huh.

Mike,
I have a question. Are the yellow turn signals actually amber LEDs in an amber housing or are they only amber because of the housing? I mean, trying to get the clear lense with yellow LEDs will be pointless this way, if the LEDs aren't actually amber. Thanks and sorry for all the questions.

BTW, looks like the surgery will be at the end of March/begining of April, unless my Xrays show that it can't be done. In any case I will let you know on March 8th.

The LEDs I found are Amber LEDs inside a clear flexible housing - gonna try them out next month and will post my results...

I actually bought a set of these for $30 bux at my local autozone. Still brand new if anyone is interested. I just never installed them because they were flexible rubber-like material which would eventually turn yellow from the sun. They do light up amber as Jeff pointed out.

It is an inexpensive alternative, which I'm always searching for, but to get the effect that I wanted, I had to cut my mirrors and go for the clear lense leds.

^^^There are some that are amber lense w/ amber leds. Then there are the ones that are clear lense w/ white leds.

The only issue with wanting the clear lense w/ amber leds is making sure that the parts are interchangeable. I'm just not having any luck on locating these and I'd have to buy a set to test and they're too expensive for me to do this.

I'll let you know once I'm able to see if the clear lense will fit on the amber leds. I too wanted to go this route for a long time, but have not been able to find the time to do so.

I'll keep you guys posted on this.

p.s. the thought of surgery just makes me ill... :( :o

Mike,

I have one more question for you (hopefully, I'll be doing this at the end of the month)...

Do you have pics of anyone that has done the amber led's?

I was thinking of maybe smoking the led's on the mirror once I got them back... so it wouldn't really matter what color the outside is... and if we're not certain whether white or amber is most legal, I figure it doesn't matter to me that much what color other people see :) ... just curious as to how "amber" the light would be (so that it would show through the smoke paint)
