I've chosen 4-cylinder only because of high import tax for displacement over 3 liters here in Kazakhstan. Otherwise I would definitely stick with V6 for many reasons.

I4 vs V6

Postby 47TH_Ronin » Wed Aug 05, 2009 8:55 pm

it is funny how a lot of these guys say V6. I live in killeen and there are plenty of v6 solara's. I got into a little stop light to highway fight with a red v6 solara just like mine but he didn't have the body kit......and I beat him in my 4 banger. Not sure if the headers, Injen SRI, throttle body spacer, Custom exhaust with TRD axle back, and custom short shifter helped me out a little....but uhhh, I won hehe The power to weight ratio is a bite of a @itch with the 4 cylinder and at take off you can tell...but for me, after second gear its all good. plus, like one of the members said.....the 4 banger can be turbo charged. I already have scion tc headers......just waiting for the money to up grade to the scion turbo kit. Plus..hey, if any solara v6 does beat me, I'll just hunt them down in my 10 second 5.7L v8 firebird LOL!!! Come with CUBIC INCHES or go home!!!!!!

im in the process of selling my firebird now...gonna use the money for some add-ons to my lara. my bird gets me into too much trouble. i had my car keys taken away and ordered by my company commander to not drive for a week because two weeks ago me and some asshole in a new Evo tried to race me down 195 in Florence and DPS cought us.....I was clocked at over 155 mph, got arrested....the evo guy too lol but it was worse for me cause i was in front and going faster. woulda thought we murdered someone....had 3 dps cars, 2 suv's, and a Florence bike cop LMAO. my wife almost divorced me..being the reckless driving, extreme exhibition of speed, and speeding +80mph in a 70mph zone came to about 1500 bucks. and for all you people against street racing....it was on a country highway with fresh black top and no one was on the road....but the damn DPS cop. and being in the military sucks, because my commander had to come bail me out, so i got it from the civi side, plus the army side, but...I smashed that damn EVO!!!!!

yea...he was racing.....he looked over at me at the light...reved his engine and when the light turned, he gunned it and held it. now i didn't say i beat him bad, but i was in front when we both had to slow down due to traffic...and i was in front before we had to slow down. coulda been he was a crappy driver too.........

i have the 4 cylinder and really wish I had the 6. But I got an amazingly low price on the Solara I bought and full service records. It was the best deal I have ever seen on any car, so I couldn't pass it up (I happen to work for a very large dealership conglomerate and the owner gave me that price). That said, I wish it was the 6 clyinder!

I actually have both engines: a 2006 V6 convertible, and a 2006 4 cylinder coupe. Honestly, with the exception of the first gear, i dont feel much of a difference. I average 17 mpg in the V6, and 26 in the 4 cylinder. The 4 cylinder also feels alot lighter... my whole family agrees that my 4 cylinder is a much better handling and performance car... of course with exception of first gear. and if anyone is looking at buying new, the stock solara sound system is MUCH better than the JBL... but that could always be due to the fact that the JBL is in the convertible and could have smaller speakers in the back.

Let me know if anyone else has any questions between the two cars, the V6 is loaded with the exception of the nav system and sport package.

The 4 cylinder is (i believe) pretty much stripped with the exception of the sport package... but now the 4 cylinder has all the mods listed in my sig, the convertible has nothing done to it with the exception of new tires.

I'm actually quite pleased with the performance of my 2002 2.4L. The gas mileage is also great. The car is not "fast" by any means (and I say this after riding in my buddy's boosted STI), but it sure is unexpectedly quick! I get into scuffles with other V6 cars on a regular basis and most of the time I find my car is quicker- but that may be because mine is a 5sp. Stock btw.

Cheers!

^ blasephmous. the JBL speakers is a premium sound package. they wouldn't offer it if the stock speakers were "MUCH" better. also the convertible is heavier than the v6 coupe. also 17 in the v6 mean you ain't drivin it right.

your comparison has some biases in it.

I have a V6, but I wish it were a V8. It's not lacking in any way,
especially with the manual shifter and the extra hp gain from the
K&N filter, but I'm 'OLD SCHOOL' and I remember the dynamic
power of the V8's.

Definitely get a Carfax Report, if you can. Mine told me when the
tires and battery were bought and each time the oil was changed
from date of manufacture to the month before I bought it. Jimmm
