I dropped the ol' K + N in a while back and did the vaccum rerouting (big difference) and recently I removed that carbon filter. #1 thing is when you do all this make sure you reset you're pcm (disconect the power and ground from you're batt for 10-15 mins) to let the pcm relearn the shift points because after I removed the carbon filter I was getting very harsh down shifts/bumps and by the way, removing the carbon filter help out ALOT on the trottle lag problem. Also I didn't have to "dremel" it out I just used some side cutters and broke/cut it off (just be careful!)
