On my side I was seeking 19" but none have the style I like...I think I will stay with my little 18" wheels !

My tires are almost all used at 90% (in 1 summer !!!) Yoko AVS ES100...I don't know if it is my way to drive or if the tire have a weak treadwear (I mean too sticky)...I think I will buy Toyo Proxes T1-R.

I personally have high-end Mich Touring Tires. They're quiet, compliant, and have far less wheel-spin (read: Better traction) than the OEMs.

maybe i should have also asked wat size tires u guys recommend
since i have no idea what would look nice and what would fit well
basically i will hopefully be lowering the car soon
i dont want to have to replace the tires often (less than 30k), still want a comfortable ride, since its my daily, but i dont want to give up too much performance
i also have the GE kit, so my car already looks lower?
so wat size tires?
thanks again

My stock tires (215/60R16 Potenza RE92 94V) on the 16-inchers is almost out of tread at 26k miles. My tireman says they wore out pretty even...My treadwear number is 160 (pretty low??) is 26k good for these tires?.

They did have good cornering, but considering that the Solara is a pretty high sitting car (SUV like most Toyotas), I think I should get better tires...any recs?

I often see V rated tires wear out at around 30,ooo miles in my shop; that seems to be the norm for the higher speed rating/softer rubber. I know what you mean about the "SUV" height of the stock car; I don't plan on lowering mine either, so I just put Kumho EcstaASX tires on ours in size 245/60R16. They've been on for 1000 miles now without rubbing problems on the stock rims (originally I thought there was an issue, but found out I made the mark in the dirt on the strut myself when I was removing the wheel and tire combo- silly me). The added width, lower aspect ratio, and higher load capacity (97 vs 94, or 1477 lbs carrying capacity vs 1609 lbs) makes the car handle like a dream, and I don't feel there is much of a wear trade-off between V and W rated rubber. The nice all season tires even handled a few inches of snow better than the stockers did.

245's fit? My tire shop is looking for 225's to see if they fit, but he's a bit doubtful. I was looking into those rim saver tires (the ones that look a bit more buff around the rim), but they don't have for my rimsize.

BTW, was ride height affected by using those tires?

I was surprised too, but I just had it in the shop again today... they definately fit. When I first checked it out for fitment, I could fit my whole fist between the usual 'contact points' and the stock tires, which is alot of room by any standard. After the 245s, there was still an inch between them everywhere but the strut body, which had about 3/8". I did install spacers tonight (1" on the rear; 1/2" on the front), but that was only to further improve the stance and look. The same tires are also available in 225/55-16, and they will fit with an even larger margin of safety... they have rim protectors too. The 225/55 and 245/50s are less than a quarter inch shorter than stock, which puts the speedometer off by a little over 1mph at 65 - no big deal. A 235/55 16 is an exact match for height, but the only reasonable tire available is the Nitto 450. I like Nittos, but I was also doubtful about their snow performance... hope this helps.

Orlin03, from what I can see, you calculations seem OK. If I understood correctly, you went with 245/60R16 so you would be a bit off diameter, but nothing too complicated. Sebas007 combo is a bit closer to stock specs, but he only went 225 from 215. You went to the 245's. That tire is a bit wider than stock...won't it put additional stress on the front suspension? Components will wear out a bit quicker (not much problem), but I've heard that manufacturers sometimes remove warranty if they find out we use wider tires...

Hmmm... I have personally not heard that a wider tire could void the warranty. They can cause more stress on front end components; this can be avoided for the most part by making sure the vehicle is in motion before turning the wheel, but that is a good practice no matter what. I think there is more wear to worry about when the suspension is altered/lowered than there is with a 1.5 inch tire width difference, as the stiffer springs transfer more shock through the linkage; once the car is in motion, the force required to turn the wheel becomes negligable.

Nice things to know...I always like to have the vehicle in motion when turning (my last car was a 1994 Taurus GL...Ford's power steering pump solution sucks), but I was thinking on using the TRD lowering springs in the future. Most ppl say that the 1.2"/1.4" F/R lowering doesn't affect the car's suspension geometry, but I guess we were not focusing on the wear & tear on the rest of the suspension.

P.S. BTW, I got some Bridgestone Potenza EL400 tires...I think they are exact same specs (94V, Temp A, Traction A), but they have slightly higher treadwear rating @ 260 (up from 160). Was told this was the replacement model for the Potenza I had, hopefully they will grab the road just as much. :)

We always sacrifice something when we modify our cars; cars are made to please the masses, and we narrow their focus as we approach the extremes we love. I like Brigestones; I personally think they are one of the few 'Big' tire manufacterers that still create innovative tires focused on more than just tire wear (a huge 'bottom-line' with most of the main companies). The Potenzas I have seen balance traction with long life well; I wish I could say the same for the stock Michelins I removed from our 06, which felt like cold hockey pucks sliding across the pavement...

General post about treadwear rating...the treadwear rating is set by the manufacturer. You cannot compare a 280 Yokohama tire to a 280 Toyo...but you can be sure that a 300 Toyo Proxes 4 will last longer than a 280 Toyo Proxes T1R . I take this from a new read...I'll try to find back the link.

Very good point to bring up, and one that I hope will one day change! Treadwear ratings are only useful when comparing the life of one tire line to another in the SAME brand... there are no mandated rules for setting this number, so a tire rated 200 from one company could wear at the same rate as a tire rated at 380 from another manufacterer!
