No sweat! I read the rest of the post twice, and you didn't sound like you were a NOOB FUBARING AROUND, so I didn't want to REALLY jump your case!!! (You made some good technical points, too!)

Easy transposal....

Coolant by-pass on the throttle body

Postby siennasc98 » Wed Jan 10, 2007 10:22 pm

You can do this MOD for $0 cost.

Coolant flow inside the throttle body (IAC valve was removed for illustration purposes).
Image
Just remove the longer (inlet) hose at the IAC side and inset the other end to the collant outlet/return tube (back to the engine). The hose will be on a loop and to prevent it from deforming (flat), insert a rubber bushing (from shock absorder or sway bar).

The other hose that you removed from the engine barb is then looped on the IAC/Throttle side. You can also use rubber end caps if you have some and keep the shorter hose for future use or if you decide to rollback to the original setup.

Wait, what does that do again? This whole thread lost me a while back. Are there any gains to that mod?

And somebody please help me with my CEL light problem, please! I'll try to get the code ASAP, I'm finallyu installing the header tomorrow lol! I already installed the O2 sim, but it gave me the CEL light after about 20 miles. Thanks :)

no gains, maybe <1 hp but that is undetectable by the butt dyno.

in fact i am going out to my car right now to change it back because i got a cel yesterday and someone mentioned something about it being detrimental to your emissions system. code was P1130 and P1150 - bank 1 & 2 a/f sensors.

Crisp - Yes, it's an I4. Lucky me :P

bassthrive - Is there any way to check for what codes are thrown without a reading device? I know on the Infiniti G20 it blinks a certain amount when you push a button so you know what code it is. Can we do anything like that?

I don't think those codes have anything to do with the mod. It would seem kind of weird for that to throw a a/f sensor code???

I dont think so, we need an OBD scanner. The dealership read and reset mine for free, but even a place like autozone or pep boys can usually help you with engine codes.

Back on topic, for me, the gains from this mod are...
(1) simply not there for our engine
(2) not worth it on the off chance it does mess with emissions and throws a cel

I am sure some toyota engineer sitting in some room back in early 1990 designed the coolant to pass through the TB for a reason. I changed mine back to stock last night and I feel no change whatsoever. In fact, it may be a little quicker (though I did disconnect battery while working, therefore ECU reset). I lit up the tires pretty effortlessly as I was leaving my friends house.

The only logical reason I see in putting coolant through the TB is to keep it from freezing. I know this mod shouldn't give much or any power, but I would think it would help a little in keeping air intake temps down. Especially for those of us with a s/c. For something that costs pretty much nothing and easy to install (even a caveman could do it - LOL), I'm going to give it a try. I've got an OBD scanner, so I'll see if I get any codes.
