Has anyone ever explained what the point of a spoiler is on a front wheel drive car?

It doesn't matter if its front or rear wheel drive... spoilers only become functional at high speeds (i.e. why boxter/911/crossfire spoilers only come out at 70+ mph)...

This is why I love lip spoilers... they add class as opposed to the "look at me" look...

lol you guys are cruel

it was a joke, it wasnt serious lol. i just couldnt believe how it lined up to the car.

my point was that u could market it to ricers on ebay and they would buy it and you would make money cause its def better than the TT style spoilers you see on some pos car.

i am 21 and the type r wing on the RSX is an OEM part, it has no purpose you are correct, but it fits the car very well especially from the front. I have it off right now cause i agree wingless is cleaner, and they do make a lip spoiler for the RSX which is also nice.

my purpose of this post was for someone who would actually have the balls to put it on and be different.

i know most of you guys drivin these cars are older and soon to be dead so ur not into that style wing. just my two cents.

you guys really think that the wing looks bad on this car? i agree it is high, and i need a rear lip, but i think its badass especially from the front.

If a spoiler provides downforce, I guess I still down't understand what advantage that provides over wheels that neither steer nor drive.

Well it provides downforce for the whole car... and rear wheels never steer a car anyway...

No matter if you have front or rear wheel drive you dont want your back end flying out when you are going fast... that what you need the downforce for...

Clarification

Postby JMSinMaryland » Thu Dec 21, 2006 3:13 pm

A spoiler on the majority of vehicles is for looks (both FWD and RWD). If there was any effect on a FWD car it would not be a positive effect. Even on the Lamborghini Diablo the spoiler was optional. The purpose of a functional spoiler is to provide additional downforce to the drive wheels, i.e. rear spoiler would provide downforce to rear wheels at high speeds. The spoilers they put on the cars any poster on this forum could afford is strictly for aesthetic purposes. There are very few cars that I can think of that functionally need a spoiler, only ones that come to mind are the McLaren F1 and Bugatti Veyron.
