***Gen 2 V6 - JPP Headers & Y Pipe - HISTORY & INFO

Postby PXLpainter » Sat Apr 21, 2007 11:21 am

Guys - I've been out of town all week and JP is finishing up a custom project this week and next.

Don't expect much of an update for a couple weeks until they have a break in production to do R&D.

I won't keep you in the dark - I'll let you know what I know when I know it. ;)

*Edit: For all your suggestions to see if we can get other Toyota models with the V6 interested in this GB as well, the main key is the Y-pipe here (point of greatest flow restriction) - so even if the headers might fit (depending on clearance, etc) if the Y-pipe isn't EXACTLY the same, it's a moot point. ;)

We are checking part numbers though to see if any are interchangeable OEM - if they are, we'll post on some other forums to help build the GB numbers!

I'm scheduled to drop my car off on May 15th. They will have it through the end of the month to do the testing/fitting/etc... while I'm back in Chicago and MI.

Will report results when I get back and we'll see if we have enough interest to pursue further development by then.

We should also check to see what other 3MZ Toyotas may benefit from this as well - keeping in mind, the Y-pipe is the key here - what makes the headers worthwhile. ;) If the Seinna or Highlander (or??) use the same Y-pipe as the Solara, then we have a ready audience. If not, then we've got a tougher sell at this point, since we don't even have 10 people on the list anymore!

headers

Postby trd4life » Thu May 03, 2007 9:00 pm

the gen 1 jp headers should bolt up the gen 2 solara just fine. I have a 3.3 3mz-fe installed in my 97 camry using gen1 jp headers. the y pipe on the other hand may be an issue

It is confirmed.....

Check this out........

The 3MZ is the same Block as the 1MZ, I am pretty sure you have read that, It is just bored out to be a 3.3 instead of the 3.0.

Now, if it is the same block, a lot of parts off the 1mz fit it, such as Gabe for example doing his 3.3 block and a 3.0 head, 3mz/1mz hybrid. I can tell you out of experience the 3MZ can be used with 1MZ motor mounts, and the 5 speed tranny fits, .

And lastly, go to http://www.mr2board.com/forums/ and look for Oteck, he also has a 3MZ and he is using the Ebay Headers for the gen1.... So if you are doing it for looks, why not just get the ebay headers?

Agreed

Gabe doesn't pop around too much but he's in the top 5 when it comes to performance knowledge of this forum. If he says so I believe it. The y-pipe test would be easy to see if it'll fit or need to be redeveloped. I'm sure they'll test it when Jeff (?) takes in his car.

Geezes guys - we've gone over this all before...

Sure - the manafold has been confirmed a match - that only shortens up R&D time - doesn't affect manufacturing time/costs.

Besides, the Gen 1 headers were ONLY for S/C application, so the rear header will still need to be a bit different, so we're not THAT far ahead of the game.

And as I've mentioned several times, the Y-PIPE is the key to making this all work correctly and is what will take the most testing here.

If you want cheap short cuts - knock yourself out.

I'd rather go for true, tested performance myself.

But it's all really a moot point since nobody's signing up for the GB. I might just be paying a bunch for some custom headers and Y-pipe myself and the rest of you will be on your own. :(

Sorry - but I'm just tired and pissed about my sway bar fitment issues and prolly slightly intoxicated (hey - it's my fuggin B-day for 20 more minutes dammit!) :x

Question

Postby JMSinMaryland » Thu May 03, 2007 11:37 pm

What makes you think the Gen 1 headers were for S/C only? I never heard anything like that and I've been around since they first came out. Maybe you're mistaken? If the y-pipe needs to be redeveloped maybe they'll accept a lower number in the GB?

Because the guy who made them told me - and showed me just how that affects the fit - as well as the flow/length of the pipe.

GB List as of 5/3/07:

[R&D unit] PXLpainter (Jeff - SG/TN/TS) - CP-e(tune)/TRD Muffler
1. Crispone (Chris - SG) - CP-e (tune)/TRD Muffler
2. Biggi_e (Eddie - SG) - CP-e (non)/TRD Muffler
3. Down2theC (Mike - SG) - CP-e (non)/OEM muffler
4. Sebas007 (Sebastian - SG) - CP-e (tune)/TRD Muffler
5. Zedrick1985 (Zedrick - SG) - Injen SRI/Magnaflow Muffler
6. Aziandanny (Danny - SG) - OEM/OEM Muffler
7. v6secamry (Man Tran - SG) - OEM (Camry)/TRD Muffler
8.
9.
10
11.
12.
13.
14.
15.

We're left now with needing 8 more people to complete this GB. I'm going to start looking at other 3MZ platforms and checking if they have a similar Y-pipe - might get other interest on this outside of the whimpering Solara crowd.

I know there are a very small handful of serious Solara modders out there and most of them are Gen 1-ers... the rest have signed up for this GB already.

Some point and time though, JP is going to want some proof that we have serious interest or they won't complete the R&D and Dyno cycle - or I'll be spending about $2500 out of my pocket for a custom tuned exhaust setup this Summer!
