Thinking about Backup Camera

Postby HID04V6 » Thu Sep 07, 2006 4:49 pm

I'm thinking about adding a backup camera to the NAV unit in my 04 Solara. I'm wondering though, is it really worth the time, effort and money for the camera. The solara is a little tougher to see out of when backing than other cars are. I know some people on the site have one and am curious if they think it was a worthwhile mod. Thanks!

Hell YEAH...

Time - about an hour
Money - about $200-$250

Both are not that much...

I love it when I don't have to wait for my rear window to defrost before backing up...

Have 2007 convertible and unable to do it myself. Camera is being put in 9AM, will let you know. You should have no problem finding a unit for your car at the above price. Finding one for the 2007 with factory nav. has been a problem. Some have used the eclipse bec 105 in your year, Crutchfield has it on their web site and a couple of other places. They are great, wanted one, dealer had never had one installed and place that does their outside work at first wanted to use sep. screen and then came up with a price of $975, using nav. system. Price will be less at this place, will post back.

Is there a kit for cars where when you back up, it makes a beep beep noise like them trucks out there?

I think that might be better than backup cameras because most of the time it is not the driver who do not notice the other party behind his or her car it is THE OTHER PARTY who do not notice the car.

Is a backup sensor one of those things that make sounds when you back up?

The backup beeper you're talking about is about $10 at Pep Boyz - it hooks up with clamp connectors to your backup light hot wire and you stick it somewhere under your bumper or rear Q-panel/fender.

I had one on a big conversion van that I could not see SH!T outta and people were still fukking stupid enough to walk right behind me all the time! Not only did it NOT work (read: not effective) it annoyed the crap outta my kids and people laugh at you for having one. :(

Just got back from shop, no back up camera for 2007 installed. It seems like no one has ever done a 2007 with factory nav. yet.

Have you definitely confirmed that the Eclipse BEC 10x's doesn't work?

They had a Bec 105 unit. I guess the place to plug it in is gone. A 4 pin connector? Only one unused connector in back of unit in 2007. White one is gone. I don't know anything about these units, just what I over heard. Unused one is for sat. radio. He is working on a solution that does not involved Nav. system, but will be more costly.

Ive done some searching on the site and can't seem to figure out if I need the BEC 104 or 105. My car is an 04 with the OEM NAVI in it. Also, does anyone have a screen shot of what the camera shows when you are backing up? Thanks

I installed the 105 on the '04 and it was plug n play. When you put it in reverse, the camera comes on and shows you what the camera sees.
If you're curious on where to mount it, here's how I did it:

The install was very good IMO, I guess I got lucky. When we sold the car, the salemen at the Lexus dealership was amazed that it wasn't professionally installed. Yes, it was a little scary cutting a hole in the bumper, but I knew the camera wasn't going anywhere. I just wish the car was black, though. It did kind of stick out, but that's ok, because it did it's job well - especially in the convertible.

As I understand it, the BEC 105 is the current camera model and superceeded the BEC 104. I have not done the installation on my 06, it's something I've been considering for a long time. These cameras are on eBay all the time, some at very good prices. I recall some months ago a post saying the camera on their Gen 2 was mounted just above the rear License Plate. The wire was routed with the plate light wire, no holes were drilled. It plugs right into the rear of nav unit. There has been posts in the past that show the rear of the unit. My question has also been, that my car came with the rear back up sensors. I've always wondered it those sensors may have used the plug on the rear of the nav, thus making camera installation impossible.

Here is the Eclipse BEC105 backup camera. The 4-wire plug into the 2004 Solara Navi unit. It will provide power, ground and video signals.

Back photos of the Solara Navi units. My 2005 Camry (E7003) Navi unit is the same as 2004. The white connector is for the 4-wire plug backup camera cable. Not sure where to tap on the 2007 model.

Backup camera in action and activates when you put the vehicle in Reverse.
