Need some help installing OBX sport pedals on my 2006 Solara

Postby steve-o » Tue Jul 04, 2006 1:54 pm

I feel worn and defeated.. I almost want to cry :) :)..Today I figured I'd swap out my OEM pedals and install the OBX sport pedals. I bought them about a month ago so I was psyhced having the time to do it.. Well, the Accelerator was a snap. Put a bit of soap and some water on it and had it on in 10 minutes. Now I go for the clutch.. Well 2 hours later I'm still struggling, sweat pouring, and then thunder..
I put the OEM back and wimpered my way to the house dripping in sweat, both brake and clutch OBX's in hand. I looked for some tips. Yes I kow use soapy water, I did.. I could get the rubber lip around the top or bottom, but when it came to that last stretch it just would not happen! Anyone find some "trick" or anything that made this less painful? I'm going to try again tommorow when it stops raining, hopefully it will be a bit cooler out. I'm sure I got he right pedals part number PTS-22-06031.
When I turn the clutch and brake pedals over M1 is stamped on the rubber. I'm thinking of slicing the rubber a bit to get soe more stretch out of it. Any help would be appreciated. No laughing please :) :)
- Thanks - Steve-o

Try taking off the existing covers, they should pull off. Then, put the OBX's on.

I think that's what he said he did - and had to put the OEMs back on..

I was thinking of getting these too, but if they're that much of a PITA I'm not sure...

The Accelerator does not have a cover. That went on fine. The OEM brake, and clutch cover comes off, then you put the OBX over the metal, and that is were the problem lies.. I'm telling you I still feel beaten. the manual actually tells you to discard the OEM covers.. Yeah right..

IIRC, I used a screwdriver to pry the rubber around the metal... it was a huge PITA...

I'm thinkin the same thing, maybe put a mirror in back so I can see WTF the problem is. and maybe a needle nose or screwdriver or some plastci thing to help it along. they want you to use "Soapy water". The KY or vasoline might be too messy and that makes it hard to grip, so, yeah a real pain in arse.

Are the clutch and brake pedals the exact same size? Is there a different OBX pedal for clutch and brake. (Sorry - grasping for clues.)

The brake and clutch pedals are the same size. I was hoping that with the number of people on here having these pedals someone might have figured something out as opposed to the brute force method..
Thanks !

^^Finally putting them in I see.

Well, like I told you a while ago, and just as you found out, this was the biggest PITA to install.

I use brute force for about 20 minutes, until I finally got it. My fingers were raw. Sorry man, can't really help you.

You might want to try really hot soapy water. Hot water tends to make rubber more flexible. Just a suggestion and not sure if it would work.

I remember the brake pedal taking a very long time and almost giving up till I finally pried it around the pedal. Used lots of soapy water and just kept trying for a long time. A screwdriver might be helpful for you.

Thanks for the replies. My game plan. 1. Put a small mirror behind the pedal. 2. soak the pedal in hot soapy water(I might try silicone spray). 3. Use a small spring clamp to hold the first side I get on, this should help me manipulate it a little better. 4. Use a screw driver or needle nose plier to help the edges around the metal. 5. Yank it till it's on... Will let you all know how I make out once I get the chance to try it.
Thanks to all ! - Steve-o
