K&N vs TRD air filter

K&N vs TRD air filter

Postby Gorcman » Thu Jan 12, 2006 1:54 pm

is there a difference between the K&N and TRD air filter?

Also, if i drop in a K&N airfilter into my car... will the toyota dealership recharge my K&N airfilter for me on maintenance checks, or will i have to refill the K&N airfilter by myself in the future?

By refill do you mean clean? I doubt they will clean it for you.

I got a K&N by the way, after how many miles are you supposed to clean them?

???LOL???
you can clean it, and oil it, and pretty much use the k&n recharging kit. But thats something you personally do. if you don't want toyota dealerships (or local store) messing with your filter, there is a "STOP - THIS IS A REUSABLE FILTER" sticker thats comes std with k&N. i know i got one with mine.

Edit: your supposed to clean them in 50K miles.

Thanks, how much is the recharging kit for K&Ns by the way?

If a shop is dumb enough to throw out a 50 dollar filter then you shouldn't be going there in the first place.

It's $9.99 at Kragen, I'm thinking of getting it, my filter's been on about 30K-40K.

That's what I heard from the guy at the shop. But I'd go with K&N anyways, more dependable and everyone uses 'em.

Once I save up though... I'm moving on to the Injen Ram... That thing sounds awesome.

I've used both the TRD and K&N... I currently use the TRD in my Solara. They are both on par with each other, and either one would be well worth the money over the stock filter..

You can clean it without buying the kit by soaking it in gasoline, and moving it back and forth in a bath of the solvent.

I didn't know what to substitute for the oil, so I just bought the K&N oil to apply after the gas evaporates.

I used to do it every 15k, but it's dusty around here in AZ.

TRD Filters

Postby PXLpainter » Wed Feb 01, 2006 3:58 am

FWIW I ran the TRD filter on my '01 Tundra for 5 years and it performed fantasctically. Since it was an off-road rig, I cleaned and recharged it every 15K mi or whenever I did a lot of desert running - always used the K&N recharge kit (dealer said it was the same thing).

I'm definitely planning on doing the same with my new Solara. Will also consider running Mobile 1 from the first oil change on as well - excellent results in the 3.4l V6 for 70K mi on my Tundra.

I have a used TRD air filter, but none of the stores here carry the cleaning kit for it. They do have the K&N cleaning kit for $10, are they the same, can I use this on the TRD air filter? If not, I would have to order the TRD kit from the dealership for $15.

When you guys remove the stock filter, do you keep the baffle filter that is on top of the stock filter and put that on top of the new TRD or K&N filter? Or do you just install the TRD or K&N as is?

Thanks guys.

The K&N cleaning kit will work fine on the TRD filter, so buy what's cheaper.

I removed all additional "filters" (the one is actually an acoustic dampener) when I installed my TRD filter.

I removed the acoustic dampener as well - although I did so carefully to make sure I could put it back in if I had to. It seems pretty permissive as far as air flow, but anything in the way is - well, in the way.

Plus, why would I want my car quieter?
