getting rotors off?!?!

Postby v6secamry » Fri May 04, 2007 7:31 pm

Hey guys I wasted a friday trying to install some new rotors on the car. I got the brakes and bolts off(basically everything) and the only thing left was to remove the old rotor and put in the new one. That thing is HARD to get off, I don;t know whether i am doing it wrong or it is too rusted to get off. I tried banging it with a rubber mallet w/ WD40, but it ate away at the mallet. Soo.........what do I do now?
its a gen 5 camry v6...

I am assuming that you took the calipers off as well? Cause they're pretty much the only thing that keeps the rotors on.

Screw rubber mallets, get a piece of wood up against the rotor and hit it with a REAL hammer.

If I am not mistaken, there is also a threaded hole in the rotor you can screw a screw into to force it off, although I have never had any problems taking rotors off. Now drums: they're another story.

Yes, there are threaded holes on the rotor for you to screw. This pops off the rotor very easily and with a lot less hassle than any hammer. I changed rotors a few months ago and I had the same problem until I discovered these amazing holes :).

If you have:

1A: All 4 wheels off the ground, make sure it's stable.
Changing 2 rear rotors: You're better off putting it on 4 blocks.
Put the transmission in neutral, release the handbrake.

1B: Changing 2 Front rotors: Make sure your handbrake is on tight and put the transmission in neutral.

2: With the wheels and calipers off, rotate the rotor 1 full circle. I pounded the sh!t out of the front rotors until my neighbor and a few SGers suggested it and the damned thing came RIGHT off with ZERO struggle.
