Solara Convertible windscreen no longer available

PXLpainter,

Are you saying that the windscreen "tabs", (where the windscreen goes into the car) are floppy? or are you saying the windscreen "joint" (where you can fold it down, then back up) is floppy?

For me, the 2 positions for the windscreen are fine (joints). it's where the windscreen meets the car (tabs), that seems rather loose.

If this is normal, then I can see how people could lose their windscreens on the freeway....

P.S. Mine is identical to the pictures you posted. I don't see any differences in mine vs yours. (new vs old).

Can anyone else confirm or deny that their windscreens are floppy?

I'm getting a little worried that my Toyota dealer didn't install it properly.

thanks,
Jerry

Where the Windscreen clips into the car, it should be really tight - be carefully you're putting it in the slots right - it's easy to miss the inside "clips" that it snaps into (look at the grooves on the Windscreen tabs - they go down into a spring-clip retainer that hold it snug).

Mine was floppy where it folded-back - which I never did anyway, so I used some JB Weld in the hinges and it's solid now. ;)

Just following up on this one.

I took it to the dealership last month, and sure enough; the clips weren't installed correctly. I'm much happier with the windscreen now.

(the inside "clips" seem really weird to me).

:P

thanks for everyone's help.

What do you mean by that? Do you have any pics?

I'm designing a custom clear windscreen made out of bullet-proof plex (not that I plan on getting shot at or anything) just think it will look cleaner. ;)

Jeff, are yo going to drill tiny little holes in that, or leave it solid? Will it have the same effect as a solid piece?

It will be quite solid indeed! ;)

And I can't imagine cleaning little bugs out of holes in 1/2" plex! :o

Hmmm...just wondering if it will work the same at the normal screens with holes. I would think that solid would produce more noise/wind. I dunno.

I think the noise wiill be okay... but won't it pull the mounts right out and sail away on the I5? You're talking about the vertical part, yes?

Test cautiously... I'd hate to see it smack you on the noggin on the way out. (actually that would be kinda funny as long as you weren't hurt or killed.)

LOL!

I've got other plans for mounting it - only the top tabs on the current windscreen will be used. As for wind/noise - there are other high-end convertibles that have clear windscreens behind the driver's seat as well - the idea is to keep the wind from whipping back around and smacking you in the ears and the back of the head. ;)

I'll share pics when I'm done.

My dog loves the windscreen

Postby johanna16129 » Fri Apr 13, 2007 5:02 pm

I recently purchased the windscreen for my new convertible. I installed it myself (yes me, an old lady, by myself) with little difficulty. I did take a hint from one of the threads here and took the panels out enough to wrap a trash bag around them before drilling in order to contain the filings. It works beautifully.

I used it on my drive to North Carolina today. I left it installed with the top up for most of the trip. My dog Stephen (a medium-size dog; a large Sheltie) had plenty of room to sit up and move around a bit on the back seat. I bought a harness for him that attaches to the seat belt and is supposed to keep him from turning into a missile in a crash. When I left the freeway for the last 50 miles, I pulled over and put the top down. He appeared very comfortable sitting under the screen in back, not blasted by the wind. In my Cabrio, he used to crawl into the floor well behind my seat with his head down when I put down the top.
