2AZ Cat Back Question

2AZ Cat Back Question

Postby tacti » Fri Nov 10, 2006 8:26 pm

I just got a cat back exhaust installed couple days ago, and i feel it is way too loud for my taste.

Here is my current setup
Injen intake with custom cold air.
JPP Header.
factory cat.
2.5" straight pipe.
DynoMax SS Muffler (Straight thru muffler which you can see the exhaust thru like just a pipe..)
PhreakdOut's TRD Tip.

right now, the low buzz at idle is pretty nice (bit too loud but not bad)
when i accelerate, between 2800 to 4000 rpm, it is really loud.
I have raspy sounds, and also it drone inside the car is incredibly uncomfortable.
after 4000 rmp or so, the drone is gone, and probably from outside, it is very raspy (not confirmed, since i'm the driver all time... ^^)

What I want.
1. drone to be gone
2. raspiness to be gone
3. a little bit more quiet (not the biggest deal tho)
4. just a little bit of back pressure (just a little would be helpful)

probably the problem is that i took off the sub-muffler, but i've heard that it is the most restrictive part in 4 cyl.
from 4500rpm, the acceleration is very smooth and feels good, but not have enough torque in lower rpm (don't say it is b/c of 4 banger. i know)

i've been searched this forum, TN, and scionlife.com, and still don't know the solution.
so far, here are some of the solutions that i found after 2 days of searching.

1. add glass pack where sub muffler was
2. add 30" resonator, or two 15~18" resonator (vibrant, magnaflow, flowmaster, etc... is this the same thing as glass pack?)
3. put factory resonator back with the muffler (don't really want to...)
4. put different muffler. (Greddy, Apexi, Tanabe especially one with silencer)
5. use cat back kit made for tc, and use the pipe i got already (kinda too expensive to do now..)
6. change the cat converter to high flow (i don't know about this one. more flow, louder isn't it?)

if anyone have a video clip
with glass pack/resonator + straight thru muffler,
straight pipe + greddy, Apexi or Tanabe with/without silencer,
factory sub-muffler + straight thru muffler
would you let me know?

first day when i got my car back, i was in panic.. felt like a driving IN a fart can....
and now, panic is gone, but still sad...

I really appreciate any help.
Thanks.

do you mean factory sub-mufler? or after maket resonator?
if so, do you have any recommendation on any brand or size?
sorry for so many questions... i was expected it to be louder, but not like this... i guess i'm still in panic mode..

Milt is correct,

You've just taken too much out of your system. (Ft Cat, submuffler, 2.12" pipe to 2.50", OE Muffler to straight through design)

The OE submuffler was pretty restrictive so when you too it out, that plus the increased pipe diameter caused your acoustics to significantly change.

Per the PM I last sent, you need to add the largest resonator you can. (Yes, this is a glasspack straight through muffler) The biggest impact you did was change to 2.5" pipe. It will affect the droaning sound at highway speeds. If you need, it's OK to reduce to 2.25 going in and out of the resonator. The 2.5" was a bit too large for a N/A 4cyl.

Relax, this is cureable. Give me a shout some time today. I'll still be around the house.

One other note, do you still have your old center assembly? I figure they custom bent your new one and the old is probably still in tact. (No pun intended)

You could ask them to try to mate your old assy to the new muffler. (Which is what I thought you were doing in the first place.) My misunderstanding.
