tire size and gas mileage

Postby Levinax » Wed Jul 19, 2006 10:09 am

im just wondering, could tire size be effecting my gas mileage?

ive been looking online at what size of tire i should be running with 18's on my car, it it says 225/45-18's, and my car is currently running 245/40-18's.

could this be the cause of my horrible gas mileage?
(appx 22mpg in a 4cyl auto)

See the tutorial section for a guide to tire size. You'll see that you're getting a 1.4% difference in your speed/odometer reading. Not a big enough change to explain a major drop.

Wider tires... more friction...
Bigger rims... more weight...

All true.

Bigger rims = More rotational inertia = more torque needed to move wheels = Worse mileage.
Wide tires = Bigger contact patch = More grip = more friction = Worse mileage.

Combination of the two would lead to both a drop in a few MPG, and drop in acceleration speed. Its also why the Prius has some really skinny tires (185s)

Even 18s with 225's will lead to lower MPG and slower acceleration in almost all cases.
