The clamp and mirror worked wonders. Freed up a hand to use. The very hot soapy water gave the rubber more flexibilty. ANyway project complete. NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER!!
Here's the results and some tips to make installation less painful.

i had something like this similar done to my car using celica pedals. they were PITA but it only took me 7mins using a screw driver to keep the lip open. the only thing hard was swapping the gas cover cuz i can't use the arm it came w/.
