HOLY CRAP, 28mpg on a boosted 1MZ?!?!?!?!

Postby ASG14 » Mon Sep 15, 2008 9:39 am

Ok, so my best ever MPG on my 1MZ as N/Z was 30mpg. Witht he SC on, I could only get about 25mpg on all smooth highway driving.

On my trip down to Richmond, VA from CT (75mph average speed on highway), I got 25.15mpg.

Coming back, It was a mix of highway (70mph), High speed normal roads (55mph), as well as a lot of 20-40mph roads, and also doing some pulls for fun. Yet I pulled out 28mpg!!!! WTF? I think the only other diff was that the VA gas was not the normal 10% Ethonol we have in CT/NY/NJ. I know Ethonol loweres mpg, but holy hell. That is nuts if that is the cause of it.

I have a somewhat similar experience.

My driving consists of about 90% highway. I average 24.8mpg on 92oct. It's very hill like here.

On my trips to chicago. I'll fill up here and refill on an oasis(toll road gas station and food) getting 25.6mpg that trip.
The gas in Il. has ethanol but 93oct. I filled at the oasis on my trip home. I'll have a mpg of 28.9 by the time I get back home. Speed is the same but the difference is the hills on the road. Once I get to the toll road in Il. The Roads are much more flat.

boo....the best mileage I've ever gotten and it pretty much hasn't changed since boost or 5-speed swap, is 25mpg with about 80% highway. But then again, I usually cruise at about 85mph, and up in Canada and NY, everything has ethanol in it.

The only thing that actually changed my mpg significantly was the 5-speed swap for in-town driving, but due to its gearing though, it didn't help for highway driving.

Thats really good gas milage considering that my car got less than 30mpg from my last fillup (27.1 mpg with 70% highway).

I do a lot of highway too. (I go about 85-95mph when I am on an empty lane).

First off, superchargers tend to give extra MPG if not boosting a lot. Also, even though Ethanol has less energy than gasoline, is has higher octane rating ~100-105 (87+10% ethanol= 88.5, 91+10%=92, 93+10%=94%). If so, the mix it could help the boosted engine run leaner, with having retarting timing. Flex fuel vehicles suck if the engine is not built (or modified) to take advantage of the higher octane.

The gasoline/ethanol mixture is adjusted to be the octane rating you see on the pump. It's gasoline and ethanol blended to be 87, 89, 91, 93 or whatever the pump is. You don't actually get 94 octane when you buy 93 octane with 10% ethanol.
