Importance of Timing

Postby 99V6solaraSE » Wed Feb 27, 2008 6:29 pm

Im getting ready to dyno soon once i get everything on and Im doing a little research. Has anyone who has done any tuning worked with timing as well as air/fuel? I havent heard of it much around here.

I still dont quite understand the concept of timing but im still reading more into it. how important is it when tuning?

very important....but the obdII takes care of that for you...it will tune for a cross between safety/gas-mileage, with power being the last thing

but long story short, unless you have a way to deal with timing (i.e. emanage, ems, etc.), there's nothing that you can do about it anyway, the common/popular safc and cpe can only deal with air/fuel

I think the best choice would be the SS FTC1. Fuel as well as timing, also Gadget recommended!
As far as the MAP: "Built-in 35PSI MAP Sensor" I don't know??? Overkill??
Many have had lots of success with the FTC1.
If I can't get the CP-e figured out that is what I will be going with.
Got Boost?? :sweet:

the ftc1 seems to have some decent reviews

but to be perfectly honest, if you're going to spend that kind of money, you're better off getting an emanage with the necessary timing harnesses = more useability, customizability, and just about all shops know how to tune with one

from what my tuner tells me, timing can be very tricky...get it wrong and you can do some damage.

Just leave timing alone and tune it to the right A/F

There are two ways of messing with timing... Timing on the Spark plug, and timing on the cam gearing.... Since we do not have aftermarket cam gearing option that is out of the question. You can do the cheap old fashion gear teeth skipping but that is time consuming and if you do not know how much the valve can handle, you can bottom the valve out causing a meltdown.

You usually do not need to mess with timing unless your going for a more agressive cam position or if you have aftermarket gear sets which allows you to open the valve longer or close faster at TDC.

You can retard and all with the spark plug method but thats not really healthy and you do not see any real gains out of that but rather trying to save your motors life from knocking.

be careful at what controller you buy for the A/F tuning.. Like I told you on aim, not all shops know how to use most of the stuff out there in the market. SAFC and Emanage are the top two well known electronics used out there.

So all in all, the factory TDC setup is fine in conjunction to the cams TDC on Cyl 1. Just mess with the fuel controller and not have to hassle pulling all that stuff apart to mess with timing.

Hope I made sense. Its easy at the same time hard.
