Is it cheap or expensive? Can anyone recommend what brand or size of a turbo to use?

Currently my car is an auto, but I am going to get the conversion done. Any input or help in helping me find a turbo for my car. Also, what else is needed. Timer, belts, etc. I am not sure but want an idea of how much it will cost me. Less money spent means more beer money. :drinking:

expensive....more than a supercharger with all the necessary upgrades (fuel management, etc)...i'm guesstimating around 5-6 thousand clamshells to get it all said and done.

that's all i 'know'

Wow, if you need to ask whether it's cheap or expensive, you're better off not doing it, PERIOD.

Wow...that is good news to now. I did not have a ballpark figure. Well being that I wrecked my car a month ago, I am broke. I was thinking it would cost under 2 grand. Thanks for the info. -Bryan

I don;t think you can get a turbo for a Civic for 2 large.

I'd figure out the dude who HAS the turbo v6 and get what he has, although it is going to be MUCH more complicated than what turbo/wastegate/intercooler you need.

Pistons/Rods, fuel system upgrades, beefier tranny and bigger brakes are the ones that immediately come to mind.

Does anyone know if "that dude" has a different camshaft? I believe you want more overlap in a turboed car to get the turbine spinning.

Speaking of camshafts... I would be happy if I could get cams and headers for a 1mz... And I DON'T mean 2 thousand dollar JPP headers.

hey thanks for the link, very helpful. I guess the money I would spend my solara for a turbo would not be worth it. Hell I could take the money and make a civic fly. I will just try and get my hands on a supercharger for now. Thanks again. - Bryan

That link sounds almost like the words are coming from Corky Bell's mouth.

If you really want to learn about turbochargers get Maximim Boost Designing, testing and installing turbochargers... by Corky Bell of course.

He's ctually quite funny too, not to mention any blank mental images of how everything works will be totally cleared if they aren't already.

All that being said, it's largely not worth it to turbo the Solara unless you really love it, want a random project, or just have alot of money to spend. Buy a Supra and turbo that :toy:

i have custom turboed several cars since 1993. if you have the V6 Solara, you will spend more money than to just supercharge.
Now, using the turbo does have more benefits in the long run, like much more power, longer life, etc.. but its not very feasable.
you can turbo charge that car for around $4k..

10psi turbocharged provides quite a bit more power than
10psi supercharged

its up to you on what you are looking for.. for me supercharged is fine.. i dont need more than 350hp.. couldnt use it really if i had it

no, thats a false statement, it will not cost 4k to turbo charge the v6 solara, it may cost 4k in parts and labor just for the Turbo kit and wat not to put it on there, but for the stock v6 engine, Its a damn well known fact after 6psi getting towards 7, crap starts to go down hill. Beefing up the internals costs money too, and to go to 10psi, its gonna cost a bit to get the engine ready, if not also the tranny to even start giving u the power u want.

all in all, this v6 engine is good for about 6psi, some have had it to what? 7psi? All kinds of crap goes wrong if u read from people who have tried to boost higher, the knock sensors go haywire, and the internals arnt strong enough for that much of a boost.
