Getting Dynoed with a SAFC II, any tips?

Postby Dawgz » Sat Jun 09, 2007 7:26 pm

Going to go take my car to a Dyno Shop in Philly, and have them install a SAFC II and tune the car with it.

This is the first time i have gone to forced induction, so this is literally my first dyno experience and wat not.

Any tips on getting the car dyno'd correctly, what should i be telling them, what should i know before i go into the shop?

It would be a good idea to know what A/F ratio you want them to tune it to. Although, the computer read-out will ultimately tell them what will be the best, but give them something to shoot for. When I tuned mine with all my fuel mods and with 6lbs, I told the guy I wanted to go to 12.5:1 A/F ratio. I wouldn't go any higher than that. With the new Supra MAF sensor I have, I am at 12:1 now. So, with your setup, I would shoot for somewhere between 11.5:1 to 12:1. Also, let them know you want to run a little bit more rich at the top end for some added protection for your knock sensors.

Great tip man, thanx alot; also what do the ratio numbers mean, like u said 11.5:1, im assuming 11.5 air percentage to 1 (gas)? i literally have no clue what that number means, but ive seen it else where so i know ur right on the money...also...anything else i should look out for or ask for or bring with me?

oh and i also always wondered how they dyno an auto car? for manuals isnt the dyno pull @ third gear?

I was doing some research via the search feature and came up with this...

JoeB wrote:The general tuner recommendation is 12.5:1. However, every engine is a little different. Some people like to run a little richer on the top end for protection since that's where the biggest potential for catastrophic damage can result. For example tune to 12.5:1 up to about 4,500-5,000RPM then 11:1 after that. Personally, I tuned for a flat 12.5:1 accross the board. On the low end, it's closer to 13:1 and on the high end, it's closer to 12:1. You actually get a little more power when you run it leaner but you are taking a risk. -JoeB

he's talking about 12.5:1

do i want 12.5:1 or 12:1 or even 11.5:1?

One last thing i read from previous posts is that the dyno is Harsh on the car, and some people were blowing knock sensors while tuning!

I definitly do not want to throw a CEL when im tuning....wtf. What did u guys do?

the dyno isnt going to be any more harsh on your car than driving it daily is right now, especially if you said its slower than stock... I wouldnt worry about it any more than I would worry about driving it to the store right now.

I wouldn't do anymore than 5 pulls while your on the dyno with some breaks for the car in between to let it cool down a little. If they do consecutive pulls back-to-back-to-back, you'll get lower numbers since the car is hot. 2-3 pulls then let the car cool down. The only reason why dyno's are hard on cars is because people do back-to-back pulls on it. Also, as a general rull, don't push the envelope...don't get number hungry. Once it's tuned across the boards, leave it at that, no more.

What JoeB is recommending was for people at higher boost levels I believe. I had done exactly what he had said, 12.5:1 and got the best possible numbers with that tune, but he also said that would be the highest he would tune to, which is why I said go for something around 12:1 since I know you want it to be somewhat conservative.

an old PM from JoeB:

"I would definitely go richer if it were me. The dyno shop is doing what they do best, tune the car for power. The problem is, where the car makes the most power may not be the safest tune. Since you need to rely on the car and I don't think you want to put about 10k into the engine anytime soon, I'd go with closer to 11.8:1 that Paul recommended to me. You will lose a little power though unfortunately. -JoeB"

Paul was the guy who did Joe's tuning, he owned the Lucal Oil sponsored Solara.

o iite, so if i do 11.5:1 id get more power but if i did 12:1 id get more reliability? or is it the other way around?

so when i go to the dyno shop i should tell the guy i want to run a bit rich on the upper end to stay safe from going lean and blowing the engine / setting off the knock sensor.

Max of 3 dyno pulls

and tell him i want 12:1 A/f Ratio tune.

Is that all? or did i leave something out lol.

if they know anything about tuning, I would think that they will know all of that stuff... running rich at the top end for security is universal, not solara specific- but I suppose it is good stuff for you to know.

12:1 would be more power but less reliability than 11.5:1

Max of 3 dyno pulls I would say a max of 5 pulls (unless he gets it tuned sooner), giving the car time to cool down after the 2-3 pull

and tell him i want 12:1 A/f Ratio tune.
