AAHHH 87 octane!

AAHHH 87 octane!

Postby Dawgz » Sat Jun 02, 2007 11:03 pm

AHHHHHH, lol, i was talkin to my friend when we were at the gas station, in here in NJ we dont pump our own gas, so i was in the convo and the guy comes up and asks what i want, out of no where i said $10, regular.

Didnt even think about it, after it was filled up, i saw the octane that was lit up on the gas pump and it said 87(regular) screw, now i cant let the car go into boost till i use all this "regular" gas up.

(I only use 93-94 octane since the supercharger was installed)

CRAP! Gotta get out of THAT bad habit!! :o

I've been using Premium (highest here is 91) since I brought my car home from the dealership.

Of course, in your case, $10 doesn't buy much gas, so you'll burn through that li'l amount in no time! ;)

lol i actually asked the gas station guy if it was possible for him to syphon the gas out, haha he kept assuring me 87 octane will do nothing to the car, i didnt want to argue with him, it would have served no reason to, cause i doubt he gives a crap.

anyway, yea i got to get out of the bad habit of regular gas!.

Suggestion

Postby JMSinMaryland » Sun Jun 03, 2007 4:39 am

I've only ever had 93+ in my car, I would be scared to death running anything below especially with how sensitive the knock sensors are, maybe let it idle to use the gas instead of driving it?

Go fill it up with 93 ASAP. There is octane boost that works. It just does not cost a couple $$ a bottle. Ever heard of TORCO.

Dawgz,
You sound like you don't know what that octane number means. In case you don't, I'll just quickly explain it.
The higher the number, the higher resistance the fuel has to ignition. That is to say that 93 octane will be harder to combust than the 87 octane.
The reason you want the higher octane in supercharged and turbo'd engines is because of the increased pressure in the cylinders. The lower octane fuel may cause engine knock or engine run-on. The higher octane is more resistant to those problems. If you have a normally aspirated engine, you should be fine with the 87 octane.

^^ holes in pistons are even more expensive.

Don't sweat it: Drive w/o boosting for a few days and give it a full tank of premium.

$10, you say? How full is your tank now? Well, if gas prices are anything like it is out here in SoCal, $10 will only get you 2.94 gallons of regular stuff (assuming the price is $3.40) out of 18.2 gallons total...

So hypothetically speaking if your tank was completely empty--but assuming that you already had premium in there in the first place--the $10@$3.40/gallon only amounts to 16% of the tank, but I imagine most of it has already been used up (but I'll keep your current amounts the same just to make calculation easy).

Since your premium is about 93-94 (lucky bastard; the best we have is 91 @ $3.70/gal at Chevron... But I'll just say it's 93), so if you were to fill the other 84% up with premium, the most you'd lose is about 1 octane, 2 tops, which comes down to 91-92, our ultra-refined-but-crappy-CA-spec gas that won't affect the hypothetical "premium" range (not to mention since you drove around a bit it's probably even less), but a small amount of accidental 87 won't kill anything.
