Engine - Rebuilt or used, which is better?...

I wanted to see if you all had an opinion as to which 1mz engine would be better to use, rebuilding my own blown engine or buying a used engine with reasonable mileage.

I blew my engine and I want to bring my baby back to life. I'm supercharged, so I am concerned that maybe a rebuilt engine would not hold up. I'm considering a used engine, but I don't know that that would be any better. The costs for either approach is the same.

Thanks in advance for any input.

I would rebuild the engine - use stronger internals etc, buld it to hold all that boost - on the other hand a used engine could be worse than the one you already blew (unless you want to go back to n/a). Just my 2 cents.

If I was gonna do that and spend the funds...I'd definitely go with a rebuild, hands down. Forged internals, better rods, all that....talk to Greg or Gabe, they'll be able to tell you everything you need for a really strong engine. You'd never have to worry about blowing an engine again, plus you'd gain more HP anyway. Isn't a rebuilt engine almost a new engine? That's what I'd do.

why used man>? wouldnt a rebuilt engine with forged internals make your engine stronger if you choose to push the car more often?

I could see getting a used engine if you didn't have a 1mz-fe. You might get a sludge bomb.

And beeing boosted seals the deal. Clean the cylinders new bearings rings pistons forged rods cams blah blah smaller pulley etc...

Assuming of course, when you say "Blown Motor" the block is undamaged.

REGARDLESS, I think you need a "BUILT UP" engine...

Whether to REUSE your OLD engine is a matter of HOW MUCH DAMAGE was done.

If you get a "NEW/USED" engine, you should probably STILL rebuild it to withstand WHATEVER blew your current engine in the FIRST place...

MOST IMPORTANTLY, WHY DID THE CURRENT ENGINE BLOW?

If you DON'T KNOW, then REGARDLESS of WHICH route you take... you STILL risk a BLOWN MOTOR. NO?

Just my thoughts. (Both the QUESTION and ANSWER are "relative".)

What was your mileage on installation of the s/c and the mileage when it "blew".
What was the cause?
If you rebuild it you would probably spend just as much as a new/used engine (with unknown problems)
Of course, that depends on how extreme you go.

Pull the motor, get a set of forged pistons, rods, MLS head gaskets, and arp head studs. then get some bigger injectors and run 8psi with the option of spraying if you want.

After the engine is rebuilt, is there a break in period that you should drive the car for before you dyno?
