a couple of questions: what is the URD performance calibration unit for? also, what kind of software is required to view the info it comes with?

I believe it's their piggyback unit, kind of like the Split Second FTC. I would think it uses Window 98 and above and comes with the needed software in the included CD.

Here is a description of what it is:

Underdog Racing Development Performance Calibration Unit

Air/Fuel Ratio Calibrator

For Toyota engines with Air/Fuel Ratio Sensors

Increase part throttle power and torque in boost
Improve engine life
Reduce high Exhaust Gas Temperature in part throttle boost
Ideally suited for normally aspirated engines that have been converted to forced induction.

Do you like the idea of boosting your engine at a lean 14.7:1 air fuel ratio? Of course you don’t. This is a problem when you convert a normally aspirated engine to forced induction.

You can be in a significant amount of boost what the ECU is still operating in CLOSED LOOP mode. In CLOSED LOOP mode the ECU will fight very hard to keep the mixture at 14.7:1. That can make it very knock prone and drive the exhaust gas temperatures through the roof and reduce the engine’s service life.

In the past we had the ability to alter CLOSED LOOP mode fuel mixture on the older engines with the old style O2 sensors. This was done with the ESC1 boxes or the URD Fuel/Timing Calibrators with the EGO conditioners built in.

However, starting in 1999 in the 4Runner and 2000 in the Tacoma Toyota started using a new type of sensor instead of the old O2 sensor. This new sensor is called an Air/Fuel Ratio sensor. Since then we have not been able to affect the mixture in CLOSED LOOP mode, until now.

We have worked very hard on a solution for this and we are very pleased to announce that we have had a serious brake through. We have developed new technology that allows YOU to change the mixture in CLOSED LOOP to just about anything you want. This is done by interfacing with the new style sensor and recalibrating it with a 3 dimensional map table based on RPM and manifold pressure. This is extremely precise and absolutely repeatable. If you want the mixture to start fattening up in boost you can now do this LONG before you reach OPEN LOOP mode. Say you want the mixture to be 13:1 at 3 PSI, you can set that exactly, then as boost builds you want 12:1 at 5 PSI you can do that and everything in between, and more. The beauty of this is that the ECU still thinks the mixture is 14.7:1. You can now have a very smooth seamless transition from a boosted CLOSED LOOP to wide-open throttle OPEN LOOP.

No longer do you have to worry about engine damage because the ECU is fighting you to maintain a lean fuel mixture when it needs to be much richer.

The URD AFR Calibrator can be used by its self or with your current fuel controller. However it is best used in conjunction with a MAF signal calibrator like our Fuel/Timing Calibrator.

The URD AFR Calibrator will work on all Toyota engines equipped with the new type Air/Fuel Ratio sensor. The unit is dual channel and will work on engines with two front Air/Fuel Ratio sensors like the new 1GR-FE 4.0 V6 engine.

The URD AFR Calibrator is not currently recommended for use with supercharged engines equipped with the TRD additional injector systems. If you wish to remove the TRD control unit we can supply you with our own engine management system that will allow you to control the TRD additional injector and use this unit along with it giving you the complete tuning control that is not possible with the TRD control unit.

The URD AFR Calibrator will not work on an engine that has an old style O2 sensor. For those vehicles please consider one of our EGO calibrators.

The AFR Calibrator ships tuning software with vehicle specific installation guide for most compatible Toyota vehicles. The unit will have a start up map preloaded that is specific for the 5VZ-FE engine with the TRD supercharger.

Applications:

Tacoma 2000 California emissions and all 2001+ all engines.
4Runner 1999 California emission and all 2000+ all engines.
Any other Toyota engine equipped with Air/Fuel Ratio sensor(s)

:o Can you change the closed loop values with this unit Joe? Is there a way to upgrade our SS FTC to do this?

I just had a look at the website. The performance calibrator pic at the top of this page is the SS FTC. However, they also have the Air Fuel Ratio Calibrator (specked in Joe's post) which is new. Unfortunately, it is only for California emissions Camry/Solaras to 2002 :(
