Well, i do all the mods for a reason. Past conversations with Vampire, JoeB, Greg and Jim etc led us to understand that the EBC modifies the old VSV system in order to control boost for 2 reasons:
1.) Cut boost in 1st and in between shifts for autos
2.) Cut boost when detonation or knock occurs
1.) So if you take meticulous care of your auto tranny and watch your driving habits, then its no problem. People use normal ATF and change it at dealer intervals, but I change mine every other oil change with either redline or Mobile 1 ATF. BTW, even manuals are recommended to use the EBC, but not for reason #1.
2.) Detonation or knocking only occurs with bad gas or if you dont watch how hard you drive the car. Its basically insurance for people that boost a lot on bad gas or non-maintained engines. If you only use the best gas, and know when to let your engine cool off or check for causes of knocking, then you dont really need it.
Random:
*TRD designed the supercharger originally without the EBC. IT ran fine, but decided to lower boost using a smaller pully (less than 4psi)
*TRD released the ECU to combat the problem of chances of knocking. Since they can now control boost through the modified VSV signals, they upped boost to 4psi but did not rename the 3.2inch label on the pully.
*Without the EBC, the car can only fight knock through the use of retarding timing. With the EBC, it can also pull boost as well as timing to prevent knocking.
