AAHHH 87 octane!

Postby kingkakyle » Sun Jun 03, 2007 5:08 pm

also isn't the octane rating for the minimum rating?
so 87 is at least 87 ocatane, but it could be more

Dawgz,
You sound like you don't know what that octane number means. In case you don't, I'll just quickly explain it.
The higher the number, the higher resistance the fuel has to ignition. That is to say that 93 octane will be harder to combust than the 87 octane.
The reason you want the higher octane in supercharged and turbo'd engines is because of the increased pressure in the cylinders. The lower octane fuel may cause engine knock or engine run-on. The higher octane is more resistant to those problems. If you have a normally aspirated engine, you should be fine with the 87 octane.

I am boosted...

O and an update, i burned off most of the fuel, i didnt go anywhere near boosting for the durration, tomorrow ill fill like 15-20 bux of 93-94 Octane.

I gotta remember not to make this kind of mistake ever agian!

I was gonna say the same thing, but I kept my mouth shut

You'd save yourself some time and gas by just filling up. Every time you have to drive to the gas station, you are taking up your valuable time and using gas to drive there (even if it's only a little bit away). Also, you'll spend more in the long run as prices go up because you only bought a little at a time, you are having to buy more at a higher price sooner. :D

EDIT: I can't believe NJ still has that lame law that won't let you pump your own gas. It would be cheaper if you didn't have to cover the wages of someone pumping it for you in the price of the gas.

The increased insurance premiums for stations who allow people to pump their own gas almost covers the salary of the people who pump our gas and I don't have to leave the car when its 20 degrees out (or 100).

Dawgz - I'm not sure what the issue was. Just "dilute" the 87 octane with 93 octane.

Yeah, but I bet it would be cheaper with no guy pumping it.

While I think the ins cost thing may have been true long ago, when that ancient law was made, I doubt it is now. Especially since wages have to keep up with (somewhat) the cost of living. If the cost of the insurance was so high, all of the gas stations across the country would have full service.

I used to hate it when they had both full and self service pumps in NY, this was back in the 80s. Self serve was always full with a line, and no one went to the full serivce since it was around .10 or so cents more per gallon than the self service.

Back in the day, NJ gas prices were more than the NY (not NYC) prices, but I don't live in NY anymore.

I have one gas station is that has 92. Does anyone know a website that will help me to find some higher octane gas stations in my area?

Here is a website which has prices. They are divided up by "unleaded", "plus" and "premium". I assume that premium is the 93 and the unleaded is the 87. I hope it helps.
