Finally Building My Dream Turbo Solara

Hello All,

I know i don’t post much here. I just felt I didn’t have anything to contribute. I have learned a lot from this site and I thank everyone for that. I was going to wait until my car was complete, but I can’t wait I feel the urge to share with everyone during the project. Below are the specs as they stand now for my turbo Solara. I decided to mount the turbo in a different spot than most others I have seen mainly because I am going to be using a water to air intercooler system with a 5 pound ice box in the and the main unit fits perfect where the battery was. This also made the exhaust routing very easy and inexpensive. The downfall is I had to get a half size racing radiator.

The pictures below show the work done so far. I have all the exhaust work done. My next step is to hook up the oil lines. Then I plan on making the piping for the intercooler. Then I need to install a smaller radiator to replace the factory one and the intercooler radiator. Once complete I plan on running low boost 4-6psi for a while atleast. My future plans are to build the spare motor I have and then turn up the boost . I will be sure to add updates as I have it. I apologize about the pictures i used my I-Phone. but from what i see from the exhaust work...the rear cylinders collector is like a Y-pipe shape...and it's way too skinny. that ain't gonna flow too well =[

down pip sizing is fine...but how are you gonna bring the compressor outlet to the FMIC now the outlet is facing upwards?

also, consider deleting or relocating the cruise control module...cuz that'll free up more room for your pipe routing.

GT35 seems very large for only 4~6psi! Even at DOUBLE those levels, that turbo won't even BEGIN to spool in it's "sweet spot" until mid-upper teens and above, no? (I believe it has a 61mm compressor...) Also, can you keep the boost that low with an 8psi wastegate spring? I thought boost controllers were limited to levels ABOVE the inherent spring tension?

.70 should help with "squeezing" the spool, but I still think it's a bit large for this application. What are your bottom end build-up components and specs? (Base compression, etc...) The dynamic compression with so much boost on the upside will be substantial! Engine management? Will you be running meth/water injection?

Very interested in seeing how this comes together! Great, ambitious project for sure!

Either way I guess we will see when I am done.

I am using an Air to Water intercooler and the main unit goes where the battery was, so the fact the compressor outlet is facing up is perfect. I just need to put a 90 degree or 45 degree elbow on it and its heading in the right direction. I will try to get some PICs this weekend for you to understand.

You’re correct, I wasn’t thinking. The waste-gate came three springs smallest being 4psi. I will start with the 4psi one. Thanks, good point.

Guess I will have to wait and see what happens. I was aiming for it to be large but not too big. I didn’t want it spooling low RPM. I don’t get the best traction now without the turbo, so I was trying to avoid a car that was useless in 1st and 2nd gear like it was when I was running Nitrous. I can always switch the turbo after I have the entire system working. I have a stock bottom end with 33k on it. I have ported and polished heads which should help. I do plan on building the motor next summer. Engine management I am going to use my Apexi for this summer, and I plan on using Emanage ultimate next year when I build the motor.

No, that was rough estimate with my old heads. I had them shaved when I had them ported.
The heads that are on there now are Just ported not shaved.

For sure, when I am done we can meet up. Sorry that I don’t really have any new Pics. I have been pulling some crazy hours at work. I also found that two of my motor mounts were shot. With that said I only have one mount left to make and then I will get back on the turbo again. I hope this weekend to have the intake piping done, and then I will take more Pics.

Interesting build. Are you planning on clocking the CHRA? You're going to run into oil drain issues with it sitting horizontal like that

Yes I plan on turning it to face up and down. Does it matter which side I use for the oil drain and oil feed? Or is it only important to have it draining direct and down ?

The inlet side should be smaller than the outlet. Small side up, I think you can go as much as a 15 degree angle
