Dyno Tutorial #2

Dyno Tutorial #2

Postby Akfahad » Tue Feb 24, 2009 12:53 pm

I know this has been talked about a loooooong time ago with automatics:
http://www.solaraguy.com/viewtopic.php?t=16540&highlight=dyno+tuning

but since this isn't exactly a tutorial, I'm hoping it becomes one once I get some answers from you experts in tuning. This topic is geared towards those with the manual tranny.

a while back I took my car to a MR2 guru, http://huxracingusa.com/huxweb.htm to fine tune my Neo for me. Each pull he did was in 3rd gear vs. 4th. I've been use to tuners dyno'ing the car in 4th and since it had a big result which gear you pulled the car in for an automatic (2nd vs. 3rd), I'm wondering if there are some similarities with the manual? What are your guys' experiences/knowledge with this?

^^^agree with that brotha and the more I think about it, 4th gear would be best as it will give you enough time to properly adjust your A/F trims over a longer spectrum vs. 3rd gear which isn't quite as long.

Well, I was finally able to get back to the dyno after doing a tune-up and having a more experienced tuner fine tune the Neo for me. I was pleased with the result, although we also found more problems as well. One, I was already aware of, a loose belt (even though its brand new) and two, my clutch is slipping, which we can both see on the graph. Because of the loose belt, I'm loosing about 1lb. of boost and the slipping of the stock clutch isn't helping either. I have a PDF file to show you guys, but I'm not sure how exactly to post it since its not a pic.

We did 8 runs altogether and I had him do variations in the pulls to see the difference between 3rd and 4th gear pulls for the MT. Sorry for the monotonous videos, but wanted to give you guys some proof. All videos are noted as clutch slippage and loose belt. In some of the videos, you can hear the belt cutting loose.

Vid1: (These were with the settings I first put into the Neo, using my old SAFCII) 3rd gear pull, untuned, no meth = 231whp/204tq
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvI_ddOQJbI&feature=channel_page

Vid2: (For comparison btwn 3rd and 4th gears) 4th gear pull, untuned, no meth = 234whp/215tq
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weeb9c7JnKI&feature=channel_page

As you can see in this example, there isn't much of a difference in whp between 3rd and 4th in a MT, but a big difference in tq. Once we hooked the meth back up, I let him tune the car in 3rd gear. The shorter gear cut down on my overall cost to him, plus the tune was constant in both gears (A/F remained the same). But I think it's important to note that for verification of whp/tq numbers, you'll want them to pull the car in 4th, as you can see in my last two videos.

Vid3: (hooked up the meth for comparison) 4th gear pull, untuned, with meth = 244whp/225tq
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14qLDfm607Y&feature=channel_page

It definitely likes the meth, so much so, my tuner wanted to know where I got it from as he was thinking of incorporating it into his MR2. The little green light is the meth activating.

Vid4: (he started fine tuning) 3rd gear pull, 1st tune with meth = 237whp/218tq
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VIDLacGlhc&feature=channel_page

Vid5: 3rd gear pull, 2nd tune with meth = 239whp/216tq
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9v4IoCYq-Q&feature=channel_page

Vid6: 3rd gear pull, 3rd tune with meth = 239whp/214tq
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4YdlbuhrMQ&feature=channel_page

Vid7: 3rd gear pull, 4th tune with meth = 240whp/222tq
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgMutkpH5-I&feature=channel_page

Vid8: 4th gear pull, final run with meth = 245whp/230tq
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lpfq0ZIom5I&feature=channel_page

**Notice the difference btwn Vid 7 & 8. Nothing changed except what gear the car was pulled on.

Overall increase with the meth = +11WHP/+22ft. lbs.

Hope this becomes informative for some. It was for me.

hmm....good numbers with the clutch and belt problem...

As for the meth- quite definitely helps. Your tuner can then lean out the fuel and the ecu will also advance the timing from non-meth (since things are burning cooler) and the intake charged air is also cooler/denser

good to know about the torque numbers though, but those are low torque numbers, or at least lower than expected. I can't see the graph on the videos very well- where does your power peak out?

And I've always done my pulls in 3rd mostly because I street tune and pulling in forth to tune will be...well...pretty crazy....lol. But yah- with a good tune, the afrs will be the same regardless of gear. I'll run my car in 3rd and 4th next time on the dyno though, just to see the difference.

Good tune! and great info!

^^King, power peaks out at around 5600-5700RPMs before it starts leveling out.

I didn't get a printout of the AF ratio's but we curved it...made it more lean under 4500RPM (if I remember right) and .5 richer on the top end.

The car feels a lot better after this tune. I know my numbers are low, but I'm positive with a smaller belt and once I do my clutch job, I'll see the numbers we're used to. I'll be having him install the clutch whenever I get the money, and he can dyno it right there afterwards.

**after searching, the smaller belt I would need is the Dayco Polycog Belt (5060880) 6PK2235. Can someone confirm this and best place to buy?**

Good info. I like that the meth gives a decent boost in torque. I can't believe your stock clutch has lasted this long, I fried mine shortly after going 6psi w/o meth.

Why was it cheaper to do 3rd gear pulls...quicker runs?

exactly Ryan...just did 4th gear pull at the end to see what the overall numbers would be.

nice job? Your down about 15whp do to the slipping belt and your low tq. readings, thats def. the clutch going. Easy fixes though.

That meth makes a huge difference huh? My solara was crazy on the meth !
