Serious Turbo Question

Postby JRector » Tue Oct 16, 2007 9:58 am

Ok. obviously the cost of getting a turbo is most of the time expensive but....what all do i need to upgrade and get other than a bigger exhaust to be able to have a turbo installed onto a 99 solara?

Trade it for a gen2 V6 SE ;) or get a TRD SC for your gen 1

the platform is by no means cheap, unlike the civic. Considering your an auto and you want to run in the 14's, find a SC (if you can), do all the fuel upgrades you can, A/F tweeking you can, get some slicks, up the boost once you've done all that to include a dyno and maybe you'll be in the 14's.

Or you can just slap on some nitrous....but don't abuse it unless you want to rebuild your engine or buy a new car.

If you are serious about boosting, don't cheap out on anything. A fast car means little if it never runs right. Bottom line is that you need to have a decent knowledge of how everything works, or pay serious $ to have someone else know it.

start reading threads about the TRD supercharger and start saving those pennies, that is the easiest and fastest way to get somewhat close to the numbers you are looking for. You cant cheap out though, bare minimum I would have the following:

catback exhaust
supercharger kit
jim's fuel mod
spark plugs
wires
brake upgrades
suspension upgrades
tranny cooler
replacement gaskets

Then once you get to that level and decide you want to get even closer to those numbers, you would need at least:

smaller pulley
piggyback or standalone engine management
wideband O2 gauge
fuel pump
injectors

Be prepared to easily spend $4,000- again, this is my opinion, but do it once and do it right or dont do it at all/

Nitrous on a V6 5spd gen 1 with a CPE intake will knock the pants off of things like SRT4s and what not all day. And for all under a grand EASILY.

However the Turbo in the long run would be a fantastic idea. Other than the exhaust you're going to need a custom setup to merge the exhaust manifolds of the banks of the V6 to feed the turbo. In designing these equal length is desirable, so there's some of the kinks there, but once you manage to do this and route a couple things stuff really comes into light. I could go into it a lot further, but you're best off buying "maximum boost: designing testing, and installing turbochargers" by corky bell. It will enlighten you to everything you ever wondered but still were scratching your head about when it comes to turbos.
