Spark Plugs for boost- looking for a start...

Postby CamryOnBronze » Wed Jun 20, 2007 8:24 pm

Ive read the compendium of boosted solaras as well as some other threads on the subject, but I wanted to ask some of you boosted guys out there for some advice. I have purchased a supercharger so this isnt a BS thread, I just want to have everything ready and in great shape before I install the charger...

With that being said, lets talk spark plugs! The popular choices seem to be the Denso Iridium IK22 and the NGK Copper Performance Plugs. I plan to run 4 psi for the rest of the year, I want to know everything is done right and running well before I even think about upping the boost.

Can anyone give me a baseline plug to start out with? My other question is this: Is there a specific temperature or heat range plug that I need to buy? I was planning to order the IK22s just because of the number of people running them, but please let me know if there is anything else I should consider.

Thanks in advance for a point in the right direction guys :)

Take care of your timing belt before putting the S/C on as well.

Just trying to help

I ran stock plugs on my S/C'd Solara and stock plugs on my S/C'd Camry. I don't want to have to deal with removing the S/C more than once every 60k.

it's never a bad idea to go with what other people have said works well

I'm running the IK22's on my car and no problems, even after going through a really really lean phase (5 months?) and a really really rich phase (3 months?) and now the car's finally running the way that it should. Works great at 6psi and gives me the peace of mind to run higher boost.

Nothing wrong using stock spec plugs either, especially on 4psi. The colder plugs will actually give you less power but run safer.

And if you tear your engine apart regularly to poke around or to install one thing or another, you'll be able to check your plugs at least once a year anyway (which you should when you're going boost anyway).

ik22's are working great for me to. and if youre wondering about the heat range i believe that ik22 is the heat index for the denso iridium plug. so you could always just check what the ik22 is then know the range if you do decide to get a different plug. just my $.02.

Personally, I am using these. Good enough for Porsche... good enough for me. I also use the Nology wires with them in my 16lbs Supra... and had IMMEDIATE results when I went to the combo way back when... I actually gained a measured 2+ mpg improvement (off the boost during a full-tank highway trip to FL...), and achieved 27.5mpg with a nearly 400hp supra! My mileage NEVER exceeded 25 prior to that point.

Just my experience... perhaps I'm full of dreams.
