ARP head studs

ARP head studs

Postby JoeB » Mon Apr 19, 2004 12:22 pm

Anyone interested in getting ARP head studs for the 1MZ-FE? ARP doesn't currently make them butt I talked to a guy in their engineering department who said they would. To do so, they need some measurements like head thickness, depth from top of block to bottom of drilled hole and measurment from top of block to first thread. He said he was going to start a file on the Solara with a 1MZ-FE and will try to look into it. If you are interested, it wouldn't hurt to give them a call so they see there is interest. Their phone number is 805-525-1497 -JoeB

unless you take the head off you engine for work or replacement, you will never need to replace the studs.

Not entirely true. You are correct that when you take the heads off you should replace the bolts (actually studs). Most manufacturers use TTY (Torque To Yield) studs for the heads. Traditional bolts/studs use approximately 75% of their strength while TTYs use 100% of their strength. They do this because they are allowed to stretch a certain amount. This stretch helps provide a even clamping force and usually eliminates the need to retorque the bolts after a certain period like you have to do with traditional bolts. So whenever you take the heads off, it is recommended that you replace the studs.

I don't know if ARP studs are TTY or not. My guess would be not. My guess is that while the TTY bolts/studs are good for general use, they will not be as good for high performance use. The reason I say that is because the design allowing them to stretch. Think of it as a spring, over time it will lose its ability to return to its original position and will not hold as tightly. ARP bolts/studs are used in MANY high performance applications when pressure on the head gaskets is expected to exceed OEM specs. -JoeB
