Gauge Installation

Gauge Installation

Postby CamryOnBronze » Mon Jul 23, 2007 4:21 pm

I am preparing to install my EGT, Boost, and Oil pressure gauges sometime this week to prepare for my supercharger install and wondered if anyone had experience with this...

I read the threads about the boost gauge and understand that some material needs to be removed from the strut brace to install it/ washers must be used for clearance issues. After all of that reading, I am not really concerned about installing that gauge.

I have a couple friends that have experience with welding and EGT gauges, so that shouldnt be too much of a pain either.

My two main questions are these:

1. For the oil pressure gauge, can I just use a brass T fitting on the stock oil pressure switch hole in the block? Thats what i did with my 5sfe camry... I ran a T fitting and screwed that into the block, then I screwed the stock oil pressure switch, oil pressure sender and oil temp senders into that and didnt have any problems. I just wondered if anyone has a similar setup for their oil pressure gauge on the 1MZ or if you recommend drilling and tapping the pan- I would prefer the former for convenience. I also noticed there isnt as much space in the 1mz bay for this setup, but I think it would still work...

2. Does anyone know the specific pin/wire color combos to tap into for power and the dimming feature on the gauges? That is a long shot Im sure, but Zoni over on toyota nation was able to give me the exact pin locations on my gen 3 camry and it really saved me some time when it was time to do the wiring. If you know locations that work, Id really appreciate it so I dont have to test so many wires... I prefer to solder behind the cluster, no tapping into the cig lighter or fuse box- I want to do it right.

I have searched and have experience installing gauges, I just wondered if any of you guys had experience with installing any of these three gauges on the 1mz solara. Thanks for any advice or experience you boosted guys may have :)

EGT you do not need to weld. well i didnt and i was fine... no leaks or anything like that. where are you planning to put the probe?

as for the dimming i never did that so kudos for that.

Im not sure where the probe should be yet... Ive read before that the location varies depending on whether or not the car is boosted, but Ive never read about doing it on a V6, only i4s, so Im not sure where it should be mounted... I wasnt sure if a bung needed to be welded or if just drilling a hole would work, so thanks for the heads up on that...

The dimming is a feature my gauges came with, it just has an extra wire that should be spliced into the dimmer so the gauges arent insanely bright at night.

Im hoping to get to this this weekend, so ill let you guys know what happens...
