Question for S/C Autos- How hard does your car pull in 3rd?

I'm just wondering for other blown camry/solaras at 4psi and are also automatic....how hard does your car pull when it drops into third after redlining in second?

I know that there is something wrong with my tranny (I can only drain and fill about 1.5L of atf) and I'm collecting parts for my 5speed swap, but I can't get over the loss of power when I hit third gear.

I know that it isn't slipping though, since the car doesn't free-rev and then catch either.

Basically, it feels okay most of the times when I have nothing to compare to....but even then it sometimes feels rather lacklustre in comparison to the slam you back in your seat pull of 1st and 2nd gear.

When I race faster cars such as my buddy's celica gts with the 2zz, I can pull hard on him in the first two gears and get about a car on him, but once I hit third, my car feels as though it's just coasting instead of accelerating....then he walks past me and gets about a car ahead. And if I'm carrying passengers, he just kind of walks away on me altogether.

Is it just my car and my tranny? or is it just due to the gearing altogether for our cars?

All I can say is that I can't wait until I get my swap done... :drinking:

i think it might be your tranny. I've got a 4th gen cam, same setup as you, but mine pulls as strong as it did in the previous gears.

drain

Postby NRDriver » Fri May 18, 2007 11:10 pm

u do realize that you are only draining 1.5 qts outta your tranny cuz there is about 2 quarts thats gonna stay in your torque converter/ . 5 to 1 qt in your cooler and cooler lines an some fluid in your valve body. when you drain an auto tranny it only drains whats in the pan. so thats not unusual

^ yes....but the actual tranny holds about 7-8 liters, and a drain and fill is supposed to be around 4L, that's why I'm pretty sure there's something wrong...

I should be holding closer at least 9L since I also have a massive tranny cooler, but roughly the same amount should still be in the pan since the atf in the cooler will just sit there

and dats....I know...and I'll know it personally soon as well! :D

any more people to chime in this?

Castro- next time you get a chance, race a GTS from a standstill or from a roll and let me know what happens in 3rd.

even from a roll, when I drop into third, it's less than spectacular

ive raced a manual g35 and had good results. took the guy from a dead stop and we were side by side pretty much trading places until we hit about 90-95 where he started to creep past me. GTS, I take those all the time, its pure murder from a roll.

yeah, sounds like my tranny then, since I'm running a bit rich, but still within a decent a/f range. I'm at about 12-11.5 or so at WOT and full boost.

I can pull on a gts like nobody's business in 1st and 2nd, but by third it's over for me.
