Need Advice on Clutches + F;ywheel

Postby Eye8Pussies » Mon Mar 19, 2007 11:11 pm

I'm planning a 5-speed swap come late spring/late summer, and I'm starting to get parts together.

I'm currently only boosting 4psi on the trd s/c w/ the usual supportin mods, but later plan to go either 5.5 or 6psi + water injection.

So long story short I'm expecting at the very least 250whp and up to 280whp

I'm trying to debate if I should get a fidanza flywheel, and I probably will if I can find a good deal on one.

In terms of clutches, I'm looking at stage II clutches (stage III I think will cost too much for me)- will they be enough do you think? and I'm looking at spec and exedy clutches right now.

Specifically, what do people think about the exedy stage 2 clutches? I'm looking at this combo on ebay (if they will ship to Canada):

King, Spec stage 2 is more than enough, there was one here for sale..... I have a stage 3 and I love it!!! As far as the fidanza, I saw a sight somewhere, but just don't remember where..... I gotta look for it but I got my fidanza through a friend.

Good Luck.

hey... how easy is it to replace a flywheel?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Fidanza- ... enameZWDVW

This seems like a good deal. It's probably something that I have to take to a shop to do right?

and are all these claims realistic?

What Will An Aluminum Flywheel Do For Me?

- An aluminum flywheel is the best performance increase you can make to your street or race car.

- Using a lightweight, aluminum flywheel is a race proven way to improve the performance of any street or race car. Aluminum flywheels have been used for many years by the world's most elite cars to improve both useable horsepower and extend engine life.

- An aluminum flywheel is much lighter than obsolete and heavy factory flywheels.

- Engine life is also increased by using a Fidanza Flywheel. Since the Fidanza flywheel is so much lighter there is much less stress on the main bearings.

- Never have to resurface the flywheel Again. Simply replace the bolt-on steel friction surface.

- Car feels quicker, lighter, more responsive with a Fidanza Aluminum flywheel.

- Horsepower gains for aluminum flywheels can average 10 to 30 horsepower over stock levels at the drive wheels.

Like Milt said, stage 2 is plenty to support that horsepower gain. I've always looked at Clutchmasters myself, don't know of their reliability though.

thanks for the info guys I guess I'll stick with stage II clutch. I just remember Ratko's Stage III from back in the day and it slammed hard into gears, but felt nice to ride in still.

and milt- that was dats who was selling his....and for a crazy good price at that !#$@! But at the time I hadn't convinced myself that I needed the swap that bad yet. It's since been sold....doh...

But I'll be looking around locally first of course...but if I really can't find anything, I'll be asking around to see who knows who, etc. :D

funboy -> when it comes to something that you can't do the labor yourself and the labor can cost a lot more than the part that you are getting, I would think that it's not worth getting a used flywheel

...especially when the seller who had the car himself thinks that his car was a 3.3L v6....lol.

so nobody has had experience with exedy clutches though?

check out horsepowerfreaks.com...thats where I bought my spec stage 2+ and fidanza...

they also have a south bend clutch that rene (that1mexguy) has and I know he has been very pleased.

The 2+ is a vastly different clutch from OEM, especially when teamed up with the lightened flywheel. My wife refuses to drive my solara now! But, I had plans of going boosted when I bought it, now I have the sc, and this clutch really hooks up well! So overall, it is a whole new feel, but an excellent choice for the track.

^ thanks for the tip, I'll look on horsepowerfreaks.com and see how their pricing is

and I've never felt how the oem clutch on the e153 feels like, so it won't make a difference to me :p

Nate was running a spec stage 3 clutch in his gen 3 and told me it really didnt feel too stiff or anything at all, maybe shoot him an email at speed source to see what him and carl think- Im sure they have tons of experience with all kinds of toyota clutches, especially in high horsepower apps- not to mention the advice is free!

Good luck king, youre making me miss my gen 3 already

after reviewing many tuner sites, I did not find much good feedback on the straight Spec stage 2, thats why I went with the 2+. Personally, I would stay away from the stage 2 and go with either the 2+, 3 or the south bend clutch.
