Wierd shifting

My girlfriend keeps cmplain about her 04 V6 sports had a wierd feeling on the 1st gear. It feels a sudden rush forward (like last one 1 second) either when she slow down or when she accelerate. and sometimes it seems the 1st gear shifted very not smoothly. does anyone has same problem?

I think it also depends on the gas you put in the tank. I I noticed such a rush when I put in 87 octane.

Mine does the same thing, the way to avoid the jerk or rush forward is step off the gas when u shift into second. It works for me

I know exactly what you are talking about! It has nothing to do with a malfunctioning transmission, it's simply known as a TORQUE rush! You can get that rush by stomping on the pedal and slowing down to almost a stop (from a roll) and then accelerate again. The car is very torquey and will put you back in the seat. Tell your girlfriend not worry, hold on tightly to the steering wheel, and enjoy the ride. It's a very nice thing to have when you know you have the power to perform almost any passing mauevuer without any effort. TORQUE=Initial thrust / Horsepower =when the short term torque runs out, the hp takes over to continue the movement of the wheels.

BTW, if you think that is bad, you should drive a turbo. Geez, that will just simply break your neck. There is no feeling like turbos! It's just that surge that just takes you you back into the seat. Almost like the car is going without you while you are still inside! Awesome feeling!

Well now you know why Toyota's slogan is "GET THE FEELING".

I didn't know the original poster was talking about the torque rush, its a nice feeling in the passenger seat.

Torque steer is when the torque of a car causes the front wheels to "steer" to the right or left. It literally pulls the wheels to one side or the other under hard acceleration. It really only happens on FWD vehicles.

What this thread is about is when the transmission shifts to and from a gear very quickly, usually the 1-2-1 shift, or when you press the gas, slow down, and press the gas again. The result is the car lurching forward, almost like you were lightly rear ended.

yeah i've noticed that as well with my car as well when shifting (particularly out of first gear). if you just eases off the gas when shifting into second there won't be as much of a lurch.

Check out ultra's ride..he's got a gen 1 turbo 4 banger. Yea, I kind of felt that feeling when i test drove the new solara. I just thought it was shifting funnie.

This thread has nothing to do with the tranny. If you don't believe me, take it in to your dealer. They will say there is nothing wrong with your tranny. If anything, the tranny shifts smooth as silk. You just need to get used to low end grunt. You may want to get a license plate TQMNSTR!

When I down shift to 4th and full throttle usually gave really scary feeling. The car usually have torque steer happen so i have to hold the steering wheel really tight! It hits speed limiter easily..so i am going to order top speed limiter remove device soon.
