How do you spot new car defects?

I've only owned three cars so far (Honda, Toyota, Toyota), so I'd like to hear more from experienced owners on how to spot a new car defects/flaws.
(not related to tears/wears - except when they're premature)

For me, it's got to be when I gave the car its 1st car wash.

I told my dealer I was only going to pick up my car during the daytime and on a day with some sunshine to be able to see any possible imperfections. When I picked up my car, I did a very complete looking around making sure there were no marks anywhere on the body at all. I also checked the function of whatever I could check right there and then. There were some dirt marks on the sunroof and on the climate control plastic screen. With the dealer, I drove the car to where it had been cleaned and had a guy there scrub out those spots. Then I had them remove adhesive stickers that were still on all four wheels. Other than those minor things, nothing looked wrong and everything worked fine.

You should never pick up a car at night or when it is raining and you can't see the outside finish real well. Always take your time fully examining your car before you accept it.
