Replace Passenger Side Mirror? Can't be this easy.

Replace Passenger Side Mirror? Can't be this easy.

Postby morganm00 » Mon Feb 21, 2011 8:22 pm

I have a 2006 SLE. Two nights ago, someone parked next to me, opened their door and a wind gust flung their door open into my passenger side mirror. It left a big crack across the colored back of the mirror. I would like to replace it. I popped off the corner plate on the door and saw that there are two nuts there and what appears to be a white plastic connector to the wiring.

I've read in many places online that usually, you can't just pop the cover, and unhook the mirror because the wiring harness is inside the door panel and the only way to do get to it is the remove the panel (which I do not feel qualified/ballsy enough to do). I find it hard to believe that if I can find a mirror, get it painted (which I did find a site that will get an OEM mirror and paint it the color you specify), then all I have to do is pop the cover, remove the two nuts, unhook the mirror and replace it with the new mirror.

It just can't be that easy ... can it? I figured before I try to get a painted mirror, I would post on here to see if other people have done this and if it is really just that easy. (Also, any suggestions of places where I can get an Absolutely Red mirror would be appreciated.)

Thanks in advance...

Looks like you got a good start by finding those two screws. I mean whats the worst that can happen? Just keep at it and figure it out. Also the person that hit your mirror didn't offer to help pay for damages?

I'm with NightRider, since you had the cover popped open already I'd definitely see how far into it you're able to fix it. If the repair does require popping the door trim off, you should have no problem putting the mirror back the way it was in order to take it to a professional to fix. However if you actually see the bolts and the wire connector then I don't see a reason to pop the door trim.

(Disclaimer: I haven't actually replaced a mirror on the 'Lara so I still may be wrong.)

I'm pretty sure you've got it figured out. Should just be the two bolts and the connector.

Lol.. It's 3 screws and a connector. Definitely hard as he'll. Really awkwardly positioned last screw is deep inside so it's a toughy. It's really awkward, I had to loosen up my door panel by removing the clip that holds it in to give me an inch of room to work w.
