Brakes, and I Paid

Brakes, and I Paid

Postby krenshaw » Mon Oct 26, 2009 5:45 pm

Started going to a dealership in College Station, TX, becuase my folks live there, and I would just drop my car off first thing and then go visit my folks, but anyway, enough of the preambles:

I paid just under 500, for new pads front and rear, they turned all 4 rotors, and also had them bleed the system and replace.

I stressed the bleed becuase I've had them just replace a set of pads before and they just leave the old black stuff in there. anyway real happy with the job they did.

I guess that's not too bad if you can't do the work yourself. I personally prefer to take my time, and do everything the way I like it. Plus is a lot cheaper that way.

When you say you had them "bleed" your system, do you mean that you had them flush it out?

Did they give you a price on how much w/ all new rotors? Instead of turning them?

Could have bought new rotors too for that price, instead of just turning/resurface. You over-paid.

How much did I overpay?

Postby krenshaw » Mon Oct 26, 2009 6:58 pm

How much do all estimate I overpaid? Aside from doing it myself.

Thanks

I had a local shop do mine, and I am glad I did. I had a few seized bolts and a bent bracket. I sourced the parts and paid $130 for labor. Midwest salted roads suck!

Pay $1500 more and you could have gotten a stoptech big brake kit.

don't know how much it costs to bleed a system, but if you were a DIYer, and did it yourself

brake pads, front+back = approx 60-120 depending on quality of pad (let's assume 60, since it's a brake shop, and they're not known for using premium pads unless you specify)

turning 4 rotors = approx 20 bucks for all 4

new brake fluid = approx 20 bucks (depending on quality and quantity...never bled a system myself, so i don't know the usual volume used)

which comes out to about 100 bucks in parts

and i would estimate a 4 wheel brake job + bleed to take about 2.5 or 3.0 hours of labor,
so labor at 40/hr x 3 = 120

comes out to around $220

this is a very very very rough estimate....like i said, i don't know how long it takes to bleed a system (i assumed 0.5 - 1.0 hour), nor do i know how much their hourly rate on labor is, but it takes me about an hour to do one set of brakes (front), so i multiplied that by two (front+back = 2 hours, IMO)

for $500 you coulda gotten a twin caliper set (from here), a rebuild kit, bigger pads, and new rotors, and brake fluid, and probably come out a little cheaper (if you DIY). i'm not saying this to rain on your parade, i'm just using this as an example to compare the amount spent.

btw, check out the texas meet plans....they're in the in the events section, the meet is on nov 7th in austin

OEM pads $80-100 for front and rear

if you go to the right place they will install, turn your rotors, and include fluid for $60 per axle

Bleeding the brakes is a must when installing new pads so there is no need to request it

for $500 I would have gotten gabes relocation kit

^I bought Gabes kit and spent about $500. Maybe a little more. :D

That included:
Brackets
13" slotted/drilled rotors
slotted/drilled rear rotors
Goodrich SS brakelines
EBC Redstuff pads
DOT 4 brake fluid
Red caliper paint

Ok, ok closer to $650... :D 8)

Did the entire install myself, including bleeding the system.

I must say well worth the dough. She stops on a dime now. 8)
